Chapter 319: The Search

5 min read

Floating thrones emptied one by one as the Progenitors left the Convocation chamber. Michael was the first to speak after the formal end, wings still tight against his back."I will send only the quiet ones," he told the remaining few. "No banners, no open flights. If these two are already inside the Vampire Realm, loud angels will only tell them we know. My scouts will watch from the edges and report through sealed channels."

Fenrir cracked his neck, golden eyes hard. "My packs are already moving. I will not wait for permission. If the Vampire Realm starts burning, the rest of us are next. Better to have claws ready than to howl after the fact."

Inari’s nine tails slowed their restless motion. "I will begin weaving new barriers between the major realms. It will not stop beings of that level, but it may buy hours. Hours are sometimes enough."

Dera stayed silent longer than the others. When she finally spoke her voice was quieter. "I have only held the Human Authority a short time. Seeing Damaris move like that... I understand now how far I still have to climb. I will strengthen what I can on New Earth. If they come for the humans next, I will not be caught unprepared."

Damaris and Lilith remained after most of the others had gone. Lilith rested a hand on her husband’s arm.

"He will not thank us for any of this," she said.

"He does not need to thank us," Damaris answered. "He only needs to live long enough for us to reach him. That is enough."

They left together, the white platform falling quiet behind them.

Far across the sealed universe, on the same dead moon where they had argued earlier, Korrath and Selene felt the change.

Multiple Progenitor signatures flared at once, then settled into careful, controlled movement. Selene’s starlight form flickered as she processed the new information.

"They know we are here," she said. "The local powers have stirred. Scouts will be moving soon. Barriers are being reinforced."

Korrath’s white fire burned hotter inside the cracks of his armor. "Then the quiet game is over. We stop chasing Aeloria’s old trails. We hunt the hybrid directly."

Selene closed her black eyes and expanded her detection net farther than before. Threads of starlight stretched across entire regions of the sealed universe, brushing against residual power, blood signatures, and hybrid resonances. Minutes passed. Then longer.

"I cannot lock onto the primary signature," she said at last. "Aeloria’s preparations are older and deeper than we estimated. Thousands of years of layered seals, false echoes, and redirected paths. Every time the net reaches for the true hybrid, it slides away. She has made him effectively invisible to this level of search."

Korrath growled, the sound vibrating the dead moon under their feet. "Then she is still playing games. Even weakened, she wastes our time."

Selene’s net tightened on the next strongest reading. "There is a secondary signature. Close enough. Hybrid. Vampire and something else. It is weaker, but the structure is similar. It sits inside the Vampire Realm itself."

Korrath’s grin returned, cold and sharp. "Then that is the one. Aeloria would not leave a perfect copy lying around without reason. Either it is a decoy she expects us to waste time on, or it is close enough to the original that destroying it will force a reaction. We go there."

Selene hesitated only a moment. "If it is only a clone, killing it may give us nothing."

"Then we kill it loudly," Korrath answered. "We make enough noise that the true hybrid, or Aeloria herself, has to respond. I am finished walking in circles."

They left the dead moon without another word. Reality tore open in front of them as they stepped toward the Vampire Realm, the first true barrier of Aeloria’s old preparations already pressing against their power.

Inside her pocket realm of starfire and crystallized memory, Aeloria paused mid-instruction. Lucifer stood opposite her, breathing hard after another sequence of conceptual combat. Blood still dripped from a shallow cut on his forearm that refused to close as quickly as usual.

Aeloria’s head tilted slightly, silver-streaked hair drifting in the non-wind. She looked toward the outer edge of her domain as if she could see through it.

"They have stopped wandering," she said.

Lucifer wiped the blood away with a thought, watching it reabsorb into his skin. "What does that mean?"

"It means they have chosen a new target." Aeloria’s expression remained calm, but something colder sat behind her eyes. "My seals are still holding. They cannot reach you directly. Not yet. But they have found the next best thing."

Lucifer’s crimson eyes narrowed. "Lucian."

"Yes. Your shadow-self. Close enough in structure that their senses accept him as the hybrid they want. They will go to the Vampire Realm first. They will test him. And when they discover he is not enough, the noise they make will force every Progenitor in this universe to move."

She turned fully toward Lucifer. "That is useful. Let them waste strength on the decoy. Every barrier they tear, every fight they start, buys us more time for your next stage of growth. But it also means the quiet period is ending. When they finish with the clone, they will come looking harder."

Lucifer flexed his fingers, feeling the Pseudo-Divine authority settle deeper into his bones. "Then we use the time. Push harder."

Aeloria’s smile was thin. "Good. Because the moment they realize Lucian is only a shadow, the real hunt begins. And this time they will not be walking in circles."

Outside the sealed pocket, two Reavers continued their approach toward the Vampire Realm, convinced they had finally found the hybrid they were sent to retrieve.
