Chapter 317: Report to the Aethel

5 min read

Lirael stood in the quiet space between realities and waited for judgment. The chamber was not a room in any ordinary sense. It was a hollow of pale light and shifting geometry, where the walls breathed and the floor never quite decided if it was solid. Three figures sat before her on thrones that were more suggestion than substance. They had no faces she could name, only the weight of ages pressed into the air around them. The Aethel itself, or at least the voices that spoke for it.

She kept her hands folded and her posture straight. The avatar she wore for these meetings was the elegant one—midnight robes, starlit eyes, the perfect instrument of balance. The real Lirael stayed buried somewhere deeper.

"You failed," the central voice said. It was neither male nor female, only vast.

"I did not fail," Lirael answered. "I contained the anomaly known as Evelyn for a considerable time. The students of Lucian Black walked into the domain of their own will. I took them. That was the plan."

"And then Lucian Black walked in after them and took them back."

She did not flinch. "Yes."

A second voice, colder, spoke from the left. "You faced him alone."

"I did."

"And you retreated."

"I assessed the risk and withdrew. Facing Lucian Black without support is not caution. It is suicide. He has grown beyond the parameters we set for him after the regression. Infinite Replication is no longer the only problem. He carries something else now—something we still do not fully understand."

Silence stretched. The pale light pulsed once.

"You were the Warden," the central voice said. "You were meant to be sufficient."

Lirael’s jaw tightened for a fraction of a second. "I was meant to prune anomalies. Lucian Black is no longer an anomaly that can be pruned by one hand. He is a fracture that keeps spreading. His sister. His students. The ones called Marc and Silas. Every time we cut, something new grows from the wound."

The third voice finally spoke, quieter but no less heavy. "Marc and Silas have stalled the Outer Gods on the outer rim. Two more anomalies born from the same root. Lucian Black’s survival continues to cost us."

"I am aware."

"Are you?"

Lirael lifted her chin. "I have watched him longer than any of you. I know what he is willing to burn. I also know that sending me alone again will only result in the same outcome. He will walk through whatever I put in front of him, and the fracture will widen."

The central voice leaned forward, or at least the light around it intensified. "You ask for help."

"I ask for the tools required to finish the work. A group under my command. Specialists who understand containment and erasure. While the Outer Gods press from the outside, we close the net from within. No open paths. No retreat. Lucian Black and everyone tied to him will have nowhere left to go."

Another silence. Longer this time.

The left voice spoke with open disappointment. "You were chosen because you did not hesitate. Yet here you stand, asking for others to share the burden you were forged to carry alone."

Lirael’s voice stayed level. "I hesitated once. Long ago. You know the cost of that hesitation. I have paid it every day since. I am not asking out of fear. I am asking because the alternative is watching the fracture become permanent."

The quiet third voice considered her. "And if we refuse?"

"Then I will return to the grey and face him again. Alone. And when I fall, the next Warden will inherit a problem even larger than the one I leave behind."

The light in the chamber dimmed, then brightened again. The three voices conferred without words, their presence pressing against one another like shifting continents.

Finally the central voice spoke.

"You will have your group."

Lirael inclined her head, careful not to show relief.

"Seven specialists. Chosen for their precision and their willingness to erase without question. You will lead them. The Outer Gods will coordinate their pressure on the outer rim so that Marc and Silas cannot reinforce the keep in time. The net will close. Lucian Black, Evelyn, the students, and the remaining family will be contained or removed. No further hesitation will be tolerated."

"Understood."

"Do not fail us again, Lirael."

She did not correct the use of her old name. She simply bowed and stepped backward until the pale light released her.

The real Lirael sat alone on the same quiet hill she had visited before.

The elegant avatar was gone. She wore the simple grey dress again, bare feet in the grass, dark hair streaked with silver lifting in the wind. She stared out at the empty horizon and let the wind move through her.

Seven specialists. A coordinated strike. The Outer Gods pressing from the other side.

She should have felt nothing. That was the point of becoming the Warden. Feeling had only ever led to hesitation, and hesitation had only ever led to worse fractures.

Instead she felt the familiar weight settle in her chest.

Lucian Black would not run. He would stand in the keep with the people he had gathered and refuse to be erased. The students would fight. Evelyn would fight. Lucy would burn the world before she let them take her brother again.

And Lirael would be the one who had to cut the threads.

She closed her eyes and let the wind dance across her face for a little longer.

Then she stood, brushed the grass from her dress, and returned to the work.

The net was already closing.
