Chapter 1295: What’s Really Cooking in the Gourd?

3 min read

Scarlett Yates was momentarily stunned, a bit caught off guard. Could it be that the old man specifically called her over just to water the plants?

Although she didn’t quite understand, she took the watering can and, as per Old Master Yates’s request, watered each of the plants in turn.

She watered the plants on one side while Old Master Yates played with his birds on the other.

After finishing, Scarlett Yates twisted the watering can and obediently stood in front of Old Master Yates, like a student waiting for the teacher’s critique: "Old Master, I’ve finished watering the plants."

Old Master Yates was feeding his parrot, a very clever and well-behaved bird, flapping its wings eagerly for the food in his hand and calling out, "Old Yates, live a hundred years, Old Yates, may you have the longevity of South Hill."

The other myna bird was unwilling to be outdone, hopping onto the back of Old Master Yates’s hand and shouting, "Old Yates, I like you, Old Yates, I like you."

These two birds were probably brought by some grandchild to please him, taught with charming phrases. Old Master Yates seemed very happy hearing them, petting the parrot’s head and then the myna’s wings, laughing as he said, "You’re the most sweet-talking, alright, I’ll feed you more so you can eat your fill."

Old Master Yates was so focused on feeding his birds that he seemed to have forgotten about Scarlett Yates.

Scarlett Yates: "..."

Several times, she wanted to remind him, but held back.

Seeing how happy Old Master Yates was feeding the birds, she worried interrupting him might upset the elder.

If he got upset and didn’t want to help anymore, what would she do?

So Scarlett Yates just waited silently, hanging her hands, bowing her head, standing obediently in a standard pose.

Old Master Yates ignored her like this for about four or five minutes, suddenly remembering her, as he turned and saw her standing there obediently, paused, clapped his hands, and asked blandly, "Finished watering the plants?"

Scarlett Yates nodded, thinking that she had finished watering centuries ago, and you just thought of it now.

"Oh." Old Master Yates nodded, pointed leisurely to a patch of small vegetable garden on the other side, and said, "Then go fertilize those vegetables."

Scarlett Yates raised her eyebrows twice: "Fertilize?"

What on earth is Old Master Yates up to, asking her to water plants or fertilize vegetables; is he letting her experience farm life?

"Yes, the fertilizer is already made, in that white bag. Follow the instructions on it to pour," Old Master Yates said, then turned his head back, continuing to play with his birds.

Scarlett Yates internally struggled.

She was in a hurry, wanting to ask Old Master Yates if he had scheduled the time properly, but feared that her impatience might upset the other party.

After all, she’s the one asking for a favor.

Someone like Old Master Yates, with such high status and authority, respected and revered for years after stepping down, having a quirky personality was normal.

She never expected him to be some amiable, kind-hearted old man.

Oh well, fertilize it is, she didn’t have much else to do; keeping Old Master Yates company in watering, fertilizing, and bird feeding was still better than staying with Maxwell Saxon.

Following Old Master Yates’s instructions, Scarlett Yates helped water the small vegetable garden’s lush green cabbages.

And truth be told, Old Master Yates’s vegetable plot was quite impressive, with tender and green cabbages that had no leaves chewed by bugs; picking them to stir-fry would surely make a delicious plate of stir-fried cabbage.
