Chapter 1279: But This Time, He Ran Away

3 min read

"You’re not leaving yet?" Seeing Scarlett still sitting by the bedside, he chuckled, seemingly a bit helpless, rubbed his temple, and sighed, "Since you like staying here, suit yourself. I’m going to rest now. If you like watching people sleep, feel free."As he said, he lay down on the bed and closed his eyes.

In no time, his breathing became even and long.

But Scarlett knew this annoying man was pretending to sleep.

He truly ignored her completely.

She found it both infuriating and amusing, sitting by the bed for a while, sighed softly, and whispered, "Why did you become so annoying after losing your memory? I didn’t trouble you much before, so why are you so troublesome now?"

"Alright, you sleep then, I won’t disturb you. I’ll be next door, call me if you need anything."

The person on the bed remained motionless, only his gentle, even breathing could be heard, as if he had truly fallen asleep.

Scarlett sighed softly again, picked up the bowl of wontons, which he hadn’t touched, and slowly walked out.

She finished all the wontons.

After eating, she wiped her mouth, thinking to herself that the wontons made by the Saxon Family’s chef were tastier, recalling the bowl she had the night before Matthew left, so good she even drank the broth clean.

After the meal, Scarlett felt a bit aimless.

Matthew was pretending to sleep, clearly not wanting to see her again. She came to the hospital to look after him, but now he didn’t want her to care for him, leaving her suddenly with nothing to do.

But she’d rather sit idly in the hospital than go back to the Yates Family.

Meanwhile, right after Scarlett left the room, Matthew opened his closed eyes.

He was pretending to sleep.

He had just woken up not long ago, nowhere near sleepy again. He just temporarily didn’t want to face Scarlett, so he found an excuse.

He’s not a coward, nor does he have a habit of avoiding problems he can’t solve.

But this time, he avoided it.

He still didn’t know what to do with Scarlett yet disliked her repeatedly affecting his mood, so "out of sight, out of mind" for now.

But avoidance doesn’t solve the fundamental issue.

He could avoid it for a while but not forever. He couldn’t always avoid facing her.

Matthew felt a headache coming on.

According to Noah’s arrangement, the mysterious guest wouldn’t return until evening.

But Scarlett hadn’t been at the hospital for a few hours before Uncle Marshall came to urge her.

Outside the ward.

Scarlett and Uncle Marshall stood outside, the door ajar. Uncle Marshall conveyed Noah’s latest "order" to her: "Miss, the gentleman says you should go back now, the guest will arrive soon. You’ll need to come out and accompany the guest then."

"Miss?" Scarlett raised an eyebrow, "Uncle Marshall, before the paternity test results are out, you’d better not call me that. Otherwise, if Old Master Yates hears, he won’t be pleased."

Uncle Marshall was taken aback, paused for a few seconds, and said in a low voice, "The gentleman has acknowledged you as Miss, so whether that so-called test exists or not isn’t important. Old Master Yates’ attitude might have some influence, but you are the gentleman’s daughter, as long as he acknowledges you, anyone else’s opinion won’t change the final result."
