Slice of life removes the plot engine and asks whether the world is interesting enough to sit in. Cooking, running a shop, small-town routines, a guild that mostly does paperwork — the stakes are deliberately low, and the writing has to carry weight the plot is not carrying. When it works it is the most rereadable thing on the site. When it fails it is simply flat, and there is no arc to hide behind.
A lot of these are fantasy or isekai stories that chose calm over conquest: the protagonist arrives in another world and opens a bakery. That subgenre is now large enough to have its own conventions, and the best entries use the quiet to do character work that an action novel never has room for. If you are reading several progression series at once, one slice-of-life running alongside them is a good idea — it does not compete for the same attention.
