Historical fiction here means a period the author refuses to simplify. Court politics, military campaigns, merchant houses, the machinery of an empire that runs on paperwork and obligation — the constraint is the setting, and the pleasure is watching a character work inside limits they cannot fight their way out of. Where fantasy invents rules, historical inherits them.
A large part of this shelf is transmigration: a modern character wakes up in a historical or historical-flavoured setting and has to survive it with knowledge that is only intermittently useful. That premise is doing real work — it gives the reader a guide through an unfamiliar social system without stopping for a lecture. Romance and drama are the most frequent companions, and the strongest entries treat the period as a system of pressure rather than a backdrop.
