Mystery is a contract. The author agrees to plant enough that a careful reader could solve it, and agrees not to solve it by revealing something withheld. Everything else — detective, locked room, conspiracy, supernatural investigation — is decoration on that arrangement. It is also why mystery rewards rereading more than almost any genre here, and why a good one is obvious in retrospect and invisible on the first pass.
On this shelf the form is usually crossed with something: supernatural investigation, a system that assigns cases, a court drama where the mystery is who wrote the memorial. The crossover is what makes the genre workable at web-novel length, since a pure whodunit runs out of case long before it runs out of chapters. A finished series matters more here than anywhere else on the site — an unfinished mystery is a broken contract.
