Harem is a structure before it is a subject: one lead, several people interested, and a plot that has to keep all of those threads live at once. Handled badly it becomes a checklist. Handled well it is genuinely difficult writing, because every added character needs a reason to stay, an independent arc, and a relationship with the others that is not simply competition for the protagonist.

On this shelf the format usually sits on top of fantasy, isekai or cultivation, and the novels worth reading are the ones where the supporting cast would still be interesting if the romance were removed. Sorting the shelf below is the fastest way to tell them apart: the top-rated entries tend to be ensemble stories that happen to be harems, while the most popular ones are more often wish-fulfilment paced for weekly reading.
