Chapter 181: War room

The war room was full by 5 AM.

Glen stood at the head of the table. Caleb was at his right, screens mirroring the ley-line map. Mary sat against the wall, hands folded in her lap, watching. Isla had come in last — she’d taken the seat nearest the door, which Glen noted and filed and didn’t think about.

Twelve people. The core of Eden’s command structure. Caleb’s analysis team. The shield engineers. Two of the Monarchs’ liaison officers who’d arrived yesterday and hadn’t slept since. Everyone who needed to know what was happening to the Towers.

The overhead lights were set to half. Glen had ordered it. Full light at 5 AM after a night like this one would have felt like an interrogation. Half light let people pretend they were alert.

"The ley-line network is reconfiguring," Glen said. No preamble. The room was tired and scared and he owed them speed. "Twelve Towers across the continent are showing pre-System activation. The number is climbing. Every hour, another one pulses."

He let Caleb take over. Caleb pulled up the continental map on the main screen — the one that had been pulsing indigo since 4 AM. Twelve markers glowing. The rest blue. The blue was shrinking.

"The Herald’s death released pre-System energy into the ley-line network," Caleb said. He spoke fast, clipped, the way he did when the data was moving faster than he could explain it. "That energy hit the dormant pre-System infrastructure inside the Tower anchor points and reactivated it. The System built its Towers on top of the original structures. The Herald’s energy is waking up the original structures underneath."

One of the Monarchs’ liaison officers — a thin man named Okafor who hadn’t spoken since he arrived — raised his hand. "What does ’reactivating’ mean in practical terms?"

Caleb pulled up a split screen. On the left: a Tower’s normal energy signature — steady blue, System-regulated, the extraction engine humming along. On the right: a reverted Tower’s signature — indigo, pulsing, the pre-System bridge function active.

"The Towers were built to do two things," Caleb said. "Extract mana from the ley-lines and feed it to the System. That’s what they’ve been doing for thirty years. But before the System existed, the Towers did something else. They bridged the physical world to the pre-System mana source. They were conduits, not extraction engines. The Herald’s energy is reverting them to that original function."

Caleb advanced the split screen. A third panel appeared between the two — a waveform, jagged, climbing. The reversion signal propagating through the ley-line network, each pulse taller than the last.

"This is the acceleration curve," Caleb said. He tapped the screen and the waveform expanded. "Tower one reverted at 3:12 AM. Tower two at 3:41. Tower three at 4:03. Tower four at 4:19. You see the interval shrinking. Each reversion pumps more pre-System energy into the network. More energy means the next dormant Tower wakes faster."

He pulled up a table. Timestamps. Coordinates. Energy readings in units Glen had never seen before the last six hours.

"By 4 AM we had eight. By 4:30, ten. At 5 AM, twelve." Caleb’s finger traced the curve. "If the interval keeps compressing, we hit thirty Towers by noon. Fifty by tomorrow. The curve is exponential — slow at the base, then it goes vertical."

"What happens at vertical?" someone asked from the far end of the table. One of Caleb’s analysts, a younger man whose name Glen hadn’t committed to memory yet.

"The reversion outpaces the System’s ability to reroute," Caleb said. "Every Tower that flips stops feeding the System and starts feeding the pre-System network instead. The System’s fuel supply drops. It tries to compensate by drawing harder from the Towers that are still online. Those Towers are already stressed. They start failing faster. Cascade."

He let the word sit. Nobody asked him to define it. The waveform on the screen was definition enough.

"What happens to the System when the Towers stop extracting?" Okafor asked.

"The System loses fuel." Caleb pulled up another chart — the System’s monitoring feeds, showing the anomalies. "We’re already seeing it. Classification delays. Dungeon instability. Mana fluctuations. The System is compensating, but if enough Towers revert, the compensation fails. The System’s entire framework — ranks, skills, dungeons, the mana economy — depends on the Towers functioning as extraction engines."

Caleb switched feeds. A new panel: Hunter status windows, captured from the field teams’ interfaces. The first one was clean — the standard blue frame, rank displayed, skill list populated. The second one flickered. The rank field stuttered between B-rank and blank. The skill list cut to static, recovered, cut again.

"This is a field Hunter near the Pretoria anchor point," Caleb said. "B-rank, six years active. His status window started stuttering at 3:30 AM, twenty minutes after the first Tower reverted. The System is trying to maintain his classification, but the mana flow it uses to sustain the interface is being siphoned into the pre-System network. His rank keeps dropping and re-establishing. His skill activations are lagging — he tried to cast a reinforcement skill during a routine gate sweep and it took four seconds to fire instead of one."

"Four seconds," Glen said. Flat.

"Four seconds is a lifetime in a dungeon," Caleb said. "And it’s getting worse. The field reports from the deployed teams show the same pattern across every anchor zone. Status windows flickering. Skill activations stuttering. Inventory access lagging. The System is spending its remaining fuel trying to hold the interfaces together, and it’s losing."

He tapped forward. A new column appeared beside the Pretoria field report — more entries, scrolling.

"Durban anchor point, 3:58 AM. A-rank Hunter attempted a teleport skill. The skill activated, but the destination calculation lagged. She landed forty meters off target. In a dungeon, forty meters is the difference between the corridor and the kill zone."

"Cape Town, 4:11. C-rank team conducting a gate survey. Two of the four lost status window access entirely for ninety seconds. No rank display. No skill list. No inventory. They were blind to their own interface for a minute and a half. The windows came back, but during that window they had no System support at all."

" Nairobi, 4:27. A dungeon gate that had been cleared and sealed three weeks ago began cycling open and closed on its own. The System’s lock kept engaging and disengaging. The field team pulled back and reported. The gate is currently stable, but the instability window lasted eleven minutes."

He pulled up one more feed. A mana-flow chart for Johannesburg’s regulated grid — the distributed mana network that kept the city’s Hunter infrastructure running. The chart was a steady line with a downward slope. Gentle now. Steepening.

"This is our local grid," Caleb said. "The regulated mana the System distributes to support classification interfaces, skill slots, dungeon monitoring, gate detection. The line has been dropping since the first reversion. The shield’s conduit network runs on raw mana, so it’s unaffected — but everything the System manages is on that declining line. At the current rate, the local grid hits sixty percent capacity in seventy-two hours. Forty percent in a week."

The room was quiet. The kind of quiet where everyone is doing math in their head and not liking the answer.

"How many Towers need to revert before the System fails?" Isla asked. Her voice was steady. Precise. The aristocratic register she used when she needed the answer to be exact.

Caleb hesitated. "We don’t know. The System’s redundancy is significant — it can lose Towers and reroute. But the reversion is accelerating. Each activated Tower amplifies the signal, which activates the next one faster. At the current rate, we’re looking at weeks before a critical threshold."

"Define critical threshold," Glen said.

"The point where the System can’t compensate anymore. Classification breaks down. Dungeons go unregulated. The mana infrastructure that every city depends on — the regulated mana flow, the System interfaces, the skill activation protocols — all of it destabilizes."

Glen looked at the map. Twelve indigo markers. The System’s blue was retreating. The pre-System indigo was advancing. And somewhere underneath all of it, the court was waking up.

He couldn’t tell them that. The court, the Lost as original inhabitants, the System as harvesting engine — all of it was classified. What he could tell them was the tactical reality.

"Here’s what we’re dealing with," Glen said. "The Towers are reverting. We can’t stop it — the Herald’s energy is in the network, and the network is using it. What we can do is prepare for the consequences. If the System’s infrastructure degrades, we need to be ready to function without it."

"Function without the System?" One of the shield engineers — a woman named Dlamini — looked like Glen had suggested breathing without air. "The System runs everything. Classifications. Skill slots. Dungeon regulation. Mana distribution. Every Hunter’s interface is a System interface. If the System fails—"

"If the System fails, we still have the shield," Glen said. "The shield runs on raw mana. Pre-System energy. The System can’t see it, can’t classify it, can’t regulate it. The shield works because it was built outside the System. If the System degrades, the shield holds."

Dlamini didn’t sit down. She stood with one hand flat on the table, the other gripping the back of her chair. She’d built the auxiliary conduit network — three years of work, the system that let raw shield mana and System-regulated mana coexist in the same infrastructure. She knew exactly how deep the System’s fingers went.

"The shield core holds," she said. "I’ll grant you that. The core is pre-System, raw mana, nothing touches it. But the auxiliary systems — the distribution nodes, the monitoring relays, the failover circuits — they run on System-regulated mana. Every conduit junction outside the core is a System interface. If the System’s regulated flow drops below sixty percent, those auxiliaries start shutting down. Not the shield itself. The things that let the shield talk to the city."

"What shuts down first?" Glen asked.

"Monitoring," Dlamini said. "We lose the relay network, we lose eyes on the shield perimeter. Then distribution nodes — the shield still holds, but we can’t direct where it holds. Then failover. If a shield section takes damage, the failover circuit reroutes power from the core. No failover, no reroute. A breach in one sector stays a breach."

She paused. Drew a breath. The engineers beside her were watching her face, not the table.

"There’s a fourth layer," she said. "The classification relay. The shield’s detection grid uses System classification data to identify incoming threats — it tags mana signatures by rank and routes the shield response accordingly. If the System stops delivering clean classifications, the detection grid starts guessing. Wrong guesses mean the shield over-responds to low threats and under-responds to high ones. The shield would still fire, but it would fire at the wrong things."

Her voice was level, but her hand on the chair back had gone white at the knuckles.

"I can convert the auxiliaries to raw mana," she said. "It’s possible. The core has enough output. But the conversion takes time and it takes calibration — raw mana doesn’t behave like regulated mana. It’s denser, it’s wilder, it doesn’t follow the System’s distribution protocols. I’d need to rewrite every junction’s flow parameters by hand. Weeks of work. We don’t have weeks."

"You have seventy-two hours," Glen said. "Sixty percent capacity. Start with the failover circuits. If we lose reroute, we lose the ability to absorb a hit. Everything else comes after."

Dlamini nodded. Her hand loosened on the chair. She had edges now. A priority, a sequence, a deadline. The fear was still there but it had somewhere to go.

"That’s one city," Okafor said. "What about the rest of the continent?"

Glen looked at him. "The rest of the continent is the Monarchs’ problem. We defend Johannesburg. The Monarchs defend their territories. The twelve teams we deployed are already at the anchor points — they monitor the Towers and report the reversion rate. Caleb coordinates."

"And the Lost?" Dlamini asked. "If the System’s dungeon regulation fails, the gates destabilize. More gates. More Lost. Without System classification, our Hunters can’t—"

"Our Hunters can fight without the System telling them what rank they are," Glen said. "The System assigns ranks. It doesn’t assign skill. The skill is in the fighter, not the classification."

Okafor leaned forward. "The question wasn’t about Hunters. It was about gates. If the System loses dungeon regulation — what happens to the gates that are already open? What happens to the ones that are closed?"

The room tightened. This was the question everyone had been circling.

Glen looked at Caleb. Caleb pulled up the gate-monitoring feed. A scatter of markers across the continental map — authorized gates, regulated by the System, each one flagged with a status color. Green for stable. Yellow for monitored. The greens were dimming.

"The System authorizes and stabilizes every gate," Caleb said. "It controls when they open, how wide, how long. That control depends on regulated mana flow. As the flow drops, gate authorization gets unreliable. The System can’t hold a gate shut if it doesn’t have the fuel to enforce the lock."

"Meaning?" Okafor said.

"Meaning gates can open without authorization," Glen said. "Closed gates. Sealed gates. Gates the System locked because they were too dangerous or too unstable. If the System can’t maintain the locks, the locks fail. A gate that was sealed at A-rank threat level opens on its own, and there’s no System classification to warn us what’s coming through."

The room went still. Not the math quiet from before. A different kind. The kind where everyone is imagining the same thing at the same time.

"The Lost come through gates," Dlamini said. Quiet. "If the locks fail—"

"If the locks fail, we treat every gate as a potential breach," Glen said. "Caleb, add gate-lock monitoring to the field teams’ reporting protocol. I want to know the moment any sealed gate shows instability. Anywhere on the continent. The Monarchs need that data yesterday."

"Already on it," Caleb said. His hands were moving across the interface, pulling the gate feeds into the main display alongside the Tower map.

Okafor had his comm pressed to his ear. The other liaison officer — a woman whose name Glen had been given and immediately shortened in his head to the one who doesn’t talk — was typing fast, her face lit blue by her screen. Both of them were feeding everything back to Director Halsey in real time. Every data point, every projection, every answer Glen gave. The Monarchs’ command would have the full picture within minutes.

Good. Let them have it. Let them run their own math. Johannesburg wasn’t the only city with sealed gates.

The room shifted. The fear didn’t leave — it couldn’t, not with twelve Towers glowing indigo on the screen behind him — but it changed shape. It went from formless dread to a problem with edges. A problem you could grip.

That was what Glen did. He gave fear edges. Made it something you could hold.

"Caleb, priority one: map the reversion rate. I want projections. How many Towers, how fast, when does the System hit the critical threshold. Priority two: the twelve deployed teams report every hour. Any change in Tower behavior, any Lost activity near the anchor points, anything unusual. Priority three: the shield engineers start working on a fallback plan. If the System’s mana distribution fails, the shield needs to run on raw mana alone. It already does, but the conduit network uses System-regulated mana for auxiliary functions. I want those converted."

Dlamini nodded. Caleb was already pulling up the projection models. The Monarchs’ liaison officers were on their comms, relaying to Director Halsey.

Glen watched the room move. That was the word for it — move. Caleb’s analysts were pulling data, cross-referencing field reports, building the acceleration model in real time. The shield engineers were huddled at the far end of the table, Dlamini sketching conduit diagrams on the glass surface with a finger, marking which junctions to convert first. Okafor was speaking low and fast into his comm, and the other liaison was feeding coordinates to someone on the other end — gate locations, threat ratings, the sealed-gate inventory that the Monarchs had spent five years compiling.

The war room moved. The fear was still there, but it had edges now, and edges meant you could work with it.

Okafor lowered his comm. "Director Halsey wants a briefing within the hour. She’s convening the Monarchs’ council. They’re asking for the acceleration curve and the gate-lock projections."

"Send them everything Caleb has," Glen said. "The curve, the grid projections, the Hunter interface data. All of it. Don’t filter."

"The interface data shows Hunters losing classification mid-operation," Okafor said. Carefully. "That’s going to cause panic in the council."

"Panicking now is cheaper than panicking later," Glen said. "Send it."

Okafor raised the comm again.

Glen stepped back from the table. Mary caught his eye from across the room. She didn’t speak. She didn’t need to. The look said: you’re leading. Good.

He held the look for a beat. Mary’s face gave nothing else away — she’d been doing this long enough to keep her own fear off her face in a room like this one. But she’d seen the same acceleration curve he had. She’d done the same math. And she’d watched him give the room its edges. The look said good, and underneath the good was something closer to keep going.

Isla was already at the door. She paused — half a second, not long enough for anyone else to notice — and looked at him. Her face was composed. The Sinclair composure, the mask she wore when the room was watching. But her hand was at her side, and the fingers were tight.

Then she was gone.
