Chris the Shiba Inu is a very talented police dog who is forced to retire after an unfortunate incident in the field. He is brought to Hinata’s family in the hope of finding a fresh start, but a new incident is already unfolding…
Hinata is a thoughtful but shy boy, and Mayuka is a lively, outgoing girl who prefers to act before she thinks. With their help, Chris starts to investigate a case that’s popped up in the neighborhood. What’s the truth behind the mystery? And who is the real culprit?
Let’s talk about police dogs a little. Have you ever seen pictures or videos on TV or on the internet of police dogs being trained?
Police dogs help out law enforcement in a variety of ways. They might use scents remaining at the scene of a crime to track a suspect, or find hidden drugs and explosives, or subdue suspects to help bring them under arrest. Each of these things makes the most of a dog’s natural talents, and it’s incredible to see them at work.
There are two types of police dogs. First are the dogs raised and trained directly by the police. Second are dogs raised by civilian trainers who can assist the police when needed. In those cases, a dog must pass stringent tests and make it through a police assessment. That was how Chris met the requirements to become a police dog.
Most police dogs are larger breeds like German shepherds and Labradors. But some smaller breeds also meet the requirements. As a Shiba Inu, Chris is considered a smaller breed, but his friendliness and strong bond with Hinata help him achieve all sorts of things.
Believe it or not, your author is more of a cat person. I have a calico cat at home. But for some reason, I just really, really wanted to write a story about a dog, ha-ha. I have to thank my very enthusiastic dog-loving editor for helping me put on the finishing touches. Ms. Kana Muramoto, thank you so much for your strong encouragement.
I must also extend my deepest thanks to KeG, the illustrator who brought this story to life with his wonderful drawings. Although I’ve never talked to him directly, based on his art, I can tell that he must be a dog person!
