New York — Fisk Tower — Evening
The wind blew fiercely atop Fisk Tower, sweeping across the roof of the massive skyscraper bathed in the lights of New York.
At the center of the vast rooftop sat Peter.
Seated on a simple chair, he was completely restrained by thick steel chains wrapped tightly around his torso, arms, and legs. Every movement he attempted only made them creak a little louder, never gaining him so much as a single inch.
Around him, a circle of enemies watched in silence.
Old ones and new ones alike.
Some wore expressions of complete disinterest, almost bored by the spectacle unfolding before them. Others, on the contrary, savored every second of his humiliation, unable to hide the satisfaction they felt at finally seeing Spider-Man rendered completely helpless.
But beyond his capture, an even greater problem had just been added to all the others.
His mask had been removed, and his identity was now known.
Peter Parker's greatest secret had fallen into the hands of the very people who had dreamed for months of making him disappear.
And with that secret came every consequence he had always feared. May... Gwen... everyone he loved was now in danger. Peter remained motionless, incapable of making the slightest movement.
Yet behind his frozen expression, his mind was boiling. Images flashed endlessly through his thoughts. His capture... his humiliation...Then, one face emerged in his mind : Tombstone's.
The man with whom it had all begun. The one who had inflicted his first true wounds. The one who, without ever intending to, had also given him a reason to become a true hero.
Not just someone who stopped criminals...But someone capable of protecting others, no matter the cost. At that thought, a dull pain pierced his chest.
His gaze slowly lifted until it settled on Tombstone.
— "...You son of a bitch."
A faint smile immediately spread across the criminal's lips.
— "Ooooh... well, look who's getting angry..."
He calmly walked forward. Without the slightest hurry. Like a predator certain that its prey could no longer escape.
He slowly began circling Peter, his hands clasped behind his back, fully savoring the moment.
— "You know... I respected you. Even though you kept getting in the way of my business and were unbelievably annoying... I held you in high regard."
He continued his slow walk.
— "Because, as frustrating as it is to admit... you're strong."
He paused briefly before continuing.
— "Really strong."
He completed his slow circle before stopping directly in front of the young hero.
The smile lingering on his lips gradually disappeared, replaced by a far colder expression.
— "But now, when I look at you..."
He stopped right in front of him.
His imposing frame completely towered over Peter's, who, despite his injuries, continued to meet his gaze without flinching.
— "...All I feel is pity."
Peter didn't answer. Only his eyes revealed what he refused to say aloud. Tombstone continued calmly, as though they were discussing something perfectly ordinary.
— "From our very first conversation, I knew you were young."
He slowly shook his head before letting out an amused smile.
— "But who would've thought the great Spider-Man was nothing more than an ordinary high school student?"
A genuine laugh escaped him. The more he thought about it, the more absurd the situation seemed.
All this time, he had relentlessly pursued the man he believed to be a formidable opponent, someone capable of standing alongside New York's greatest criminals.
And yet...Behind the mask was just a teenager. The thought genuinely amused him. Not only because he was mocking Peter. But because he was mocking himself as well.
How could he have allowed himself to develop such a fierce rivalry with nothing more than a kid? Little by little, his laughter faded away, and the coldness immediately returned to his face.
— "But you know... the fact that you're just a kid doesn't change a thing for me."
He let a brief moment pass before continuing, never taking his eyes off Peter.
— "You're still a threat... a thorn in the side of people like us."
As he spoke those words, he slowly leaned in until their faces were only a few inches apart.
Neither of them looked away.
— "So remember one thing..."
His voice grew deeper, slower...
Almost chilling.
— "Tonight..."
He deliberately allowed the silence to settle, savoring the few seconds before delivering his sentence.
— "You're going to die... and join George Stacy."
The instant those words left his mouth, Peter reacted.
With a burst of extraordinary violence, he pulled on the chains binding his entire body with all his strength. The metal rang out sharply in the wind as he continued to struggle relentlessly.
The muscles in his arms tightened to their absolute limit, veins bulging beneath the strain, but the heavy steel restraints refused to give way.
He couldn't break free. A burning rage instantly consumed him. It surged through his entire body with an intensity even he struggled to contain, yet despite all that fury...
He remained powerless.
Tombstone, however, stayed perfectly calm.
— "But that's not all..."
He took a moment to carefully study Peter's face before continuing.
— "May Parker and Gwen Stacy... they'll be joining you and George very soon."
At that moment, something inside the young hero snapped. Peter pulled against his chains once again with almost inhuman violence.
Each attempt now resembled that of a cornered animal refusing to accept its fate, like a wild beast trapped inside a cage desperately trying to tear its bars apart.
The heavy chains trembled beneath every violent movement. The metal groaned. And all around him...No one spoke. Hammerhead. Silver Sable. Wilson Fisk.
They all watched the scene in silence.
As they saw the expression of absolute hatred etched across the young hero's face, they instinctively exchanged glances, surprised by such overwhelming intensity.
Everyone...Except Tombstone. He had been waiting for exactly this reaction. This anger. This hatred. This rage, growing until it completely consumed Spider-Man, all while knowing he was powerless to turn that fury into action.
To him...That was precisely what made his revenge so satisfying. Peter continued struggling with desperate determination. He pulled against the chains again...And again...Never giving up.
Little by little, beneath that overwhelming strength, tiny cracks began to appear along several of the links. A faint crack echoed. No one heard it...but the metal had just fractured.
It was slight...Yet enough to begin breaking free if Peter kept forcing them. Unfortunately, consumed by his emotions, Peter didn't even notice. The chains were still there.
Completely exhausted, Peter gradually felt his movements lose their strength until they finally stopped altogether. His breathing had become heavy...Uneven...Almost painful.
He drew several deep breaths before slowly lowering his head. When he finally spoke again, his voice was nothing more than a whisper.
Barely audible.
— "I'm going to kill you."
Tombstone raised an eyebrow slightly.
— "What did you say? Speak louder."
Peter slowly raised his head. His eyes met the criminal's. Never before had Tombstone seen eyes like those. Every trace of fear...Every trace of hesitation...Had disappeared.
All that remained was a cold, silent rage…
One that was almost unsettling.
— "I won't make the same mistake again. This time... I'm going to kill you, Tombstone."
His gaze slowly left his first enemy and shifted to Hammerhead...Then to Silver Sable...And finally to Wilson Fisk.
He stared at each of them for a long moment, sparing none of them, with a darkness none of them had ever seen in him before.
— "Every last one of you...i'm going to kill you all."
The silence became absolute.
Peter never looked away.
— "I promise you."
No one said another word.
For several long seconds, only the wind continued to blow across the top of the tower, as though even the world itself had frozen.
No one had expected to hear such a declaration come from Spider-Man's mouth. Those words were nothing like the ones spoken by the hero some of them knew... and the others had only heard about.
And yet...Not one of them truly took him seriously. Wilson Fisk finally broke the silence. His calm, commanding voice immediately swept across the rooftop.
— "Very well... that's enough, Tombstone. You've had more than enough time. Now let's finish this."
Hearing his boss's voice, Tombstone immediately turned toward him.
His expression changed almost instantly, and with the utmost respect, he acknowledged him with a simple nod, even though part of him would've gladly dragged Peter's humiliation out for a few more minutes.
— "You're right."
He took a slow breath before turning his attention back to Peter. Every trace of amusement had vanished from his face. His composure had returned.
— "I'll end this now."
Without a word, Hammerhead walked over to Peter, placed both hands on the chair to which the young hero was still firmly bound, and slowly dragged it toward the edge of the rooftop.
The chair's legs scraped across the concrete with a harsh grinding sound that echoed throughout the entire terrace.
A few seconds later, Peter was left suspended over the void.
The wind roared violently between the skyscrapers of Manhattan, whipping at their clothes and sending the criminals' long coats billowing around them.
Meanwhile, Tombstone slowly slipped a hand inside his jacket and drew his gun. He calmly walked forward until he was standing directly behind Peter.
— "It's time to turn the page."
The cold steel of the barrel came to rest against the young hero's temple. At that moment...Everything seemed to slow down.
The wind. Their breathing. Time itself...Peter could feel death drawing closer. His heart pounded wildly, every beat echoing throughout his entire body.
And yet...Despite the inevitable fate standing before him...Something deep inside him still refused to give up.
— "Goodbye... Spider-Man."
At the very last instant, Peter violently threw his head backward. The impact slammed into Tombstone's gun, knocking it away from the back of his head.
Caught completely off guard, the criminal immediately dropped his weapon. Peter didn't hesitate for a single second. Taking advantage of that tiny opening, he deliberately threw himself into the void...
Still bound by his chains. In a matter of seconds, he disappeared from his enemies' sight. Tombstone took a few steps back, calmly caught his breath, then turned toward his associates.
When he noticed the skeptical look on Wilson Fisk's face, a faint smile spread across his lips.
— "Don't worry."
A cruel gleam flashed through his eyes as he slowly approached the edge of the rooftop and cast one final glance into the abyss.
— "We made sure he wouldn't be able to swing."
His smile widened slightly.
— "That kid's finished."
