Severin’s next step sank into the wet road without breaking the surface beneath it.
He kept the 2 lead lines separated, 1 in each hand. The horses followed with their heads low, hooves finding the firmer center of the road. Alicia walked at his left with the 3rd horse. Her silver tail stayed clear of the line coiled in her hand.
Rainwater still ran along both wheel ruts, though the clouds had begun to thin above the trees. The split willow appeared after the road climbed away from the river. Half its trunk had fallen years ago and rooted where it touched the bank.
They passed it without slowing.
The pale ridge rose beyond the next bend. Water had washed its exposed clay almost white. At the top, the road divided.
The higher track continued toward the north stones and the buyer’s handoff. The lower branch turned east beneath wet branches.
Severin took the eastern road.
The buyer could wait. The ownership books couldn’t.
The branch narrowed until the horses had to walk in single file. Severin led both horses. Alicia followed with the last, her ears turning toward the slope below them.
The sound of running water thickened. A stream appeared through the trees, bending east around a stone foundation half hidden by brush. The upper timber walls leaned above it. A damaged wheel stood motionless in the channel, a broad paddle missing and another split down the middle.
The road fit Halen’s description.
That proved the route, not the man.
Alicia stopped before the last descent. Her ears angled forward.
"I hear people inside, Master. Someone is near the lower stair. Something’s being dragged above."
"How many?"
She listened again. Wind moved the wheel with a long wooden groan.
"At least 3 movements, Master. I can’t tell whether anyone else is standing still."
Severin led the horses off the road onto higher ground west of the mill. A rough stone wall hid them from the loading door. He tied both to separate trees, leaving enough line for each to turn without reaching the other. Alicia secured the 3rd farther back.
The lead horse shifted when wood scraped inside the mill.
Alicia put a hand against its neck until it stood square.
"I don’t hear another horse, Master. I still hear the people inside."
"Stay behind my left shoulder until the stair. Then close the rear door. Keep whoever runs alive."
"Yes, Master."
The south loading door stood open by the width of a hand. Severin pushed it inward.
The lower floor was stone. Water shone beside the old wheel channel on the east, but the threshold and the path to the western stair remained firm. The smell of wet timber mixed with lamp oil and smoke from above.
A man stood 4 paces up the stair with a short spear pointed down.
"Back out."
The spear drove toward Severin’s chest.
His left hand caught the shaft below the iron head. He stepped his right foot inside the line and pulled the weapon past his left shoulder. The man stumbled down 1 step, still gripping the shaft.
Severin closed the distance.
His right palm caught the jaw. His fingers locked behind the skull. The turn broke the neck before the man could recover the spear or draw another breath for warning.
Severin lowered him onto the stone landing, clear of the stair edge.
Void Devour.
Black mist covered the dead man’s boots and climbed over his body. Flesh and the deeper resistance beneath it remained together inside the closing dark until neither had a path out.

The body vanished. The spear stayed in Severin’s left hand.
Something struck wood above them.
"Go," he said.
Alicia passed him on the inner side of the stair. Severin dropped the spear against the stone wall and climbed.
The stair opened into the south-west corner of the upper floor. Shelves covered the north and east walls. Tied books, rolled papers, and flat bundles crowded them. A central table held cord, wax, loose marks, and a ledger opened beneath a stone weight.
Smoke curled from a stone-lined hearth near the north wall.
A man beside it lifted a covered ember tray toward an oil-dark cord. A woman near the table had a tied record bundle under her left arm and a small knife coming free in her right hand. The east door stood open behind her.
"Burn it," the man said. "Move."
"Alicia. Door. Keep her alive."
"Yes, Master."
Alicia crossed the firm north aisle. The woman turned toward the rear door and slashed without releasing the bundle.
Alicia moved outside the knife. Her left hand caught the weapon wrist. Her right forearm closed around the woman’s hips and turned her into the central table. The woman’s chest met the edge, but Alicia kept the pressure below the ribs and left her throat free.
The record bundle fell onto dry boards.
Severin reached the hearth.
His right hand closed around the man’s wrist before the ember tray touched the cord. His left forearm locked across the upper chest and shoulder, turning him away from the shelves.
The man drove an elbow toward Severin’s ribs and reached for the oil cord with his free hand.
Severin pushed the covered tray down into the stone hearth with his right boot. He trapped both arms against the man’s sides and held his chest free to breathe.
Void Devour.
Black mist enclosed the man’s legs, body, and head. His muscles fought Severin’s hold while something deeper pulled with them. The dark closed until neither could escape.

The weight disappeared from Severin’s arms.
Loose wrapping smoldered inside the hearth. The covered tray lay on top of it, still shut. No flame had reached the shelves.
"Still alive, Master," Alicia said.
Severin crossed to the table. The woman twisted against Alicia’s hold and tried to bring her knife hand beneath her body.
His right hand replaced Alicia’s grip on the wrist. His left arm took the waist and shoulder.
Alicia released in stages and stepped beside the fallen bundle.
Void Devour.
Black mist spread over the woman’s boots.
She kicked at the table leg and pulled toward the open door. Something deeper pulled with her body. Severin kept the knife arm turned away and maintained the enclosure until neither could escape.

The knife fell onto the boards.
Alicia picked up the record bundle with both hands. "Dry, Master."
"Put it on the table. Then bring water and sand."
"Yes, Master."
Severin checked the east door before she left. A narrow path dropped toward the stream, marked by fresh mud but no person in sight. He shut the door and set the fallen knife beyond reach of the shelves.
Alicia returned from below with a bucket and a shallow box of sand. Severin lifted the ember tray with a captured iron hook. She poured water over the smoking wrapping while he kept the tray inside the hearth. Steam rose, carrying the bitter smell of wet ash and oil.
She covered the remaining dark spots with sand.
The smoke stopped.
Severin left the jars, cords, tray, and weapons where they were. Before anything else, he needed to know what the room had nearly lost.
He retrieved the main-camp ledger and its 2 sealed order tubes onto the central table. The bundle from beneath the reeds remained in the Void until a route mark required it.
No mist accompanied the retrieval. The leather ledger and tubes simply returned where he placed them.
Alicia stood at his left while he compared the archive sign in the ledger with the wax marks on the visible bundles. The same bent stroke appeared on shelf tags and on the index sheet pinned beneath the stone weight. Cord color separated ownership books from copied seals. Route-payment pages used a flatter knot and sat lower on the east wall.
The bundle Alicia had saved carried the same cord and a tag matching an open position on the table index. The signs agreed across paper, wax, cord, and shelf position.
This was the archive Halen had described.
Severin moved along the shelves. Original ownership ledgers filled 2 sections of the north wall. Copies and seal impressions occupied the next. Payment books continued the relay marks into the east shelves.
A different repeated archive mark had no bundle beneath it.
He checked the table, floor, and the space behind the nearest shelf. Nothing matched the missing mark. Near the river wall, 2 idle millstones rested on a raised stone bed. A narrow scrape showed behind the nearer stone, but the gap was too small and partly blocked by timber.
It proved movement near the stone. It didn’t prove what had moved.
Alicia watched the shelves and the records rather than the scrape.
"You have another Original Skill," Severin said. "The one that notices a change."
"AnomalyNotice, Master."
"Can it compare this room with the marks we’ve verified?"
Alicia looked from the ledger to the shelf tags and millstone bed. "It needs a real pattern, Master. The records and the room give me one. I can notice a material difference and where it sits approximately. I can’t tell Master who made it or what something hidden contains."
"Compare the archive room and the verified record marks. Find 1 material change in how the records are stored and where it is."
"Yes, Master."
Alicia became still.
Her eyes moved once across the north shelves, the central table, the east wall, and the 2 millstones. Her breathing slowed. Her hand tightened briefly around the table edge, then relaxed.
Severin felt no change in the room. No light crossed the shelves. Nothing moved beneath the stone.
Alicia turned toward the millstone nearest the river wall.
"A record group was moved from the visible arrangement, Master. Low behind that millstone, against the stone bed. I can’t tell what’s inside or who put it there."
Severin crossed the room.
He didn’t try to lift the millstone. His fingers found a fresh wooden wedge behind its base. He pulled it free. A narrow timber panel loosened inside the old stone bed.
Heat touched his knuckles.
Severin opened the panel.
A waxed record bundle rested inside. Beneath it, a covered clay cup held a low ember. A thin cord ran from the cup through a gap toward the rear of the hearth. The cord had blackened almost to the waxed cloth.
He wrapped his hand in a wet cloth, crushed the ember and cord together, then removed the bundle.
Alicia crouched beside him without reaching into the compartment.
"That is the place, Master. My Skill didn’t tell me about the fire."
"It didn’t need to."
He carried the bundle to the table.
The moved pages bore original ownership marks that matched the visible ledgers but carried earlier transfers and signatures absent from the copies. Other books linked payments from the reed camp to the river camp. A hand-drawn map showed the branch bending around a stone-and-root point before splitting toward marked fields and settlement lines.
The map made the place reachable. It didn’t say what changing it would do.
Buyer signs appeared beside payments and the north-stones handoff, then continued onto a low-road transfer line. No personal name or final meeting place followed them.
Severin stopped reading there.
He walked the archive once more before taking anything. He fixed the empty shelf space, the index marks, the cord path, the hearth, and the false panel in memory. The millstones, wall shelves, wheel, and stone bed stayed where they were.
He began with the original ownership ledgers and the moved waxed bundle, wrapping them together before he Stored them. Alicia tied the copies and seal impressions in different cloth, and he took those next. The payment books went alone. He kept the water map with its route notes, separate from the buyer-sign pages and the north-stones handoff records.
The main-camp ledger and 2 tubes returned to their own bundle. He didn’t mix them with the archive books merely because the same mark appeared twice.
Last came the oil jars, covered tray, fire cords, short spear, knife, and other portable weapons.
Alicia checked the east path and lower floor while Severin finished. When she returned, mill dust marked her knees and her sleeve.
"I don’t hear another person near the mill, Master. The 3 horses are still where we tied them."
"Check them. We’re leaving."
"Yes, Master."
Afternoon light had reached the wet road by the time Severin closed the loading door behind him. The old mill remained with bare shelves, fixed stone, damp boards, and the dark hearth.
The 3 horses were alive and unhurt. Alicia checked each line and girth. She moved the 3rd horse away from a root that had begun to catch its lead, then brought it onto the road at Severin’s left.
Severin took the 2 nearest lines again.
The water map waited inside the Void, but he could still see the branch, the old route marks, and the stone-and-root point drawn across it.
Saelith could tell him what the map couldn’t.
He turned the horses toward her and the place where the branch changed under stone and roots.
