Synopsis

Leng Han is a loyal undead warrior who has spent over a decade serving his master, Wu Yan, from the shadows. This devotion is shattered when he becomes the target of Wu Yan's displaced desire, serving as a physical substitute for a man named Xiao Ran. The story explores a toxic dynamic defined by duty, obsession, and pain. It reads like a classic substitute lover trope found in dark danmei, blending elements of psychological angst with a rigid power hierarchy. This novel is intended for readers who appreciate heavy emotional turmoil and the transition from abuse to redemption. However, those sensitive to non-consensual themes or extreme psychological distress should avoid it. Despite its brevity, the narrative emphasizes a cycle of regret and eventual salvation. The pacing is highly condensed, focusing almost exclusively on the visceral conflict between the two lead characters.

From an editorial standpoint, the novel presents a stark, emotionally charged premise that immediately establishes a high-stakes conflict. The strength lies in its unapologetic dive into dark themes of obsession and servitude, promising a dramatic arc of regret. However, the most glaring issue is the length. With only two chapters listed as a completed work, there is insufficient room for the promised emotional evolution or a satisfying resolution to the trauma established in the opening. The narrative cannot possibly flesh out the supporting cast or the transition to a happy ending within such a limited framework. While the substitute trope is executed with intensity, the lack of substance leaves the story feeling like a prologue rather than a full novel. It is difficult to recommend a work that concludes so abruptly, regardless of how compelling the initial tension is.
