The author attempts to weave together elements of the three religions and nine streams with a psychological study of cowardice, which provides a sophisticated layer to the tomb-robbing genre. However, the technical presentation is problematic. While listed as completed, the work consists of only a single chapter. This makes it impossible to experience a traditional narrative arc or see any meaningful development between the protagonists, Qi Tuozi and Zhou Guangtai. It feels more like a conceptual sketch or a prologue than a full volume of the Twelve Lost Cities series. For a story claiming to explore thousands of years of human nature, the brevity is a significant hindrance.
