Chapter 404: Inter-Academy Tournament (XLXVI)

9 min read

The cyan light around Selene did not explode outward. But instead, it slowly started condensing itself.

The water mana that had been flowing loosely along her blade suddenly tightened, becoming clearer and more refined with every passing second.

Her breathing slowed.

Her stance adjusted on its own, small corrections that no one had taught her in words yet somehow settled into place as if she had always known them.

The entire arena felt the change.

In the stands, the earlier noise of the continuous blade exchanges died into a stunned, rising murmur.

"What is happening to her?"

"That aura... It’s stabilizing too fast."

"She’s having an epiphany in the middle of a match?!"

The reactions in the VIP section were sharper and far more pointed.

Several high-ranking nobles had already risen from their seats. One older duke stared at the platform with open disbelief.

"That boy... he was guiding her the entire time."

A countess beside him spoke in a tight voice.

"Look at the way he kept the pressure just high enough. Every exchange forced her to correct something, and unlike the other matches, he never overwhelmed her completely. He was simply... teaching her."

Another noble, a sword instructor from a major house, leaned forward with both hands on the railing.

"If she fully absorbs what he just showed her... there is a real chance she awakens Sword Intent on the spot. That level of clarity in water-sword principles doesn’t appear by accident."

Gloria’s golden eyes remained fixed on the stage, her expression colder than before.

"An epiphany under tournament conditions. And it came from sparring against him."

Aurora’s eyes gleamed with open interest. She rested her chin against the back of her hand and spoke lightly, though her voice carried.

"My student really does have a talent for bringing out the potential in others, doesn’t he? Even when he’s supposed to be eliminating them."

The Emperor’s gaze stayed on Gray rather than Selene.

"The control required to induce an epiphany while still maintaining a competitive match is not something a normal student possesses."

Near the center of the VIP section, the Saintess of Hope and Light had also risen.

Her silver eyes were locked onto Gray with an intensity that had grown noticeably stronger since the earlier matches.

The serene mask she usually wore had thinned, replaced by clear, focused curiosity.

A high-ranking bishop seated near her spoke carefully.

"Saintess... your thoughts?"

The Saintess did not look away from the black-robed figure on the platform. When she answered, her voice was soft yet carried an unusual weight.

"He is not simply strong. He understands the path of the sword well enough to open it for someone else in the middle of combat. That is rarer than raw power."

Another noble nearby added, almost under his breath:

"If Selene truly digests everything from that exchange, Sword Intent is not an exaggeration. Water-attribute Sword Intent at her age would place her among the top talents of the entire generation."

The Northern Duchess watched her daughter in silence for a long moment. A faint, complicated smile touched her lips.

"So that is how he chooses to handle her hesitation. Not by holding back... but by forcing her to see."

On the platform, the cyan aura around Selene continued to refine itself.

The water mana along her blade no longer scattered.

Her blank eyes remained fixed on the faint purplish aura that still clung lightly to Gray’s form, as if that residual presence itself was the final piece she needed to grasp.

The cyan light slowly grew denser.

What had been a soft glow tightened into something heavier and more focused. The air around Selene turned humid.

Tiny droplets began forming out of nothing, hovering in place for a moment before they started to spin.

The spinning grew faster, and so the droplets multiplied.

SPLASSSH!

A full whirlwind of water erupted around her body.

The column of water shot upward, twisting higher and higher until it punched through the open space above the arena and spread outward across the sky.

In the space of a few seconds, the entire arena was covered by a sudden, artificial rain.

Clear water fell in a steady curtain, soaking the stands, the platform, and every spectator who had not raised a barrier in time.

The crowd stared upward in pure awe.

"What is this...?"

"She created rain over the whole arena!"

"That amount of water mana... in the middle of an epiphany?!"

In the VIP section, every remaining seated figure rose to their feet.

Nobles, professors, and high-ranking observers watched the swirling column with wide eyes. The Northern Duchess’s expression finally shifted into open surprise.

Gloria’s golden eyes narrowed sharply. Aurora’s lips curved in genuine delight.

The Emperor remained silent, but his gaze had hardened with clear interest. The Saintess’s silver eyes shone with an even deeper intensity than before.

Then the falling drops changed.

Each droplet of rain elongated and hardened in mid-air, taking on the clear shape of a miniature sword.

Hundreds of water-formed blades hung suspended across the sky and the platform, all of them pointing in different directions yet somehow remaining perfectly stable.

The great whirlwind that had reached the clouds suddenly contracted, shrinking rapidly until it wrapped tightly around Selene once more.

Only then did everyone realize the truth.

It had never been a simple whirlwind of water.

From the very beginning, it had been a whirlwind of water swords.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The compressed column of water blades exploded outward in a single, controlled pulse of power.

The force washed across the entire platform in a visible shockwave of cyan light and pressurized water.

When the light faded, Selene stood at the center of the stage, her original sword still in hand, but the aura surrounding her had completely transformed.

A clear, sharp presence that belonged only to those who had touched the true threshold of the sword now radiated from her body.

Water-attribute Sword Intent.

She had awakened it.

For a long moment, Selene simply stood there, the cyan glow of her newly awakened Sword Intent still settling around her like a second skin.

The artificial rain had stopped.

The countless miniature water swords had dissolved. The platform was quiet again except for the soft drip of leftover water from the edges of the stage.

Her blank eyes slowly regained focus.

The first thing she saw was Gray.

He stood a short distance away, the short sword of dark purplish mana still resting loosely in his hand, that same faint smile on his lips.

The residual aura that had clung to him earlier, the same presence that had pushed her into the epiphany.

Realization hit her all at once.

He had not been trying to overwhelm her.

Every exchange, every swing, every time he stepped in instead of finishing the match... it had all been on purpose.

He had kept the pressure high enough to force her past her hesitation, yet controlled enough that she could still see the path he was showing her.

The clarity that had flooded her mind during the trance, the sudden understanding of how water and sword could become one, the final step that let the Sword Intent bloom- none of it would have happened without the way he fought her.

Her face flushed deeply.

The cyan light around her flickered once as emotion disrupted the newly stabilized aura. She opened her mouth, closed it again, then finally found words.

Her voice came out quieter than she intended, carrying a clear hint of shyness that the entire arena could hear in the sudden silence.

"Gray... I... thank you. For... for not just ending it. For showing me that. I didn’t understand at first, but now I do. If you hadn’t... I don’t think I would have reached this so soon."

She tightened her grip on her sword.

The water-attribute Sword Intent responded instantly, flowing along the blade in a smoother, sharper current than anything she had managed before.

Her flushed cheeks remained, but her eyes steadied with determination.

"I want to test it. Properly. Against you."

She lowered her stance, cyan light gathering along the edge of her sword as she prepared to step forward.

The newly awakened Sword Intent made the air around her blade feel heavier, more absolute.

For the first time since the match began, Selene looked ready to fight him with everything she now possessed.

Gray’s faint smile did not change.

He dismissed the short dark-mana sword with a small motion of his hand.

The purplish blade dissolved into scattered motes that faded almost immediately. Then he simply raised his right hand and extended a single index finger.

At the very tip of that finger, a faint thread of dark mana gathered, so thin it was almost invisible, no larger than a needle’s point.

Selene’s eyes widened slightly, still not understanding.

Gray moved his finger in a clean, vertical line through the air.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!

A sudden, violent rush of wind exploded outward from that tiny motion.

It was not a wide technique or a flashy spell.

It was a single, concentrated line of force that crossed the distance between them in less than a second.

The air itself seemed to part in a straight path aimed directly at Selene’s center mass.

She had no time to raise her sword.

The impact struck her cleanly.

THUMP!

Her body was launched backward as if struck by an invisible siege engine.

She flew across the remaining length of the platform, past the boundary line, and smashed hard against the spectator’s protective barrier that surrounded the arena.

The barrier flared brightly under the force. A clear elimination light wrapped around her instantly.

In the space of a single second, Selene had gone from standing in the center of the stage with newly awakened Sword Intent to being removed from the competition entirely.

The arena froze.

For several full seconds, no one made a sound.

The contrast was too extreme.

One moment she had been radiating the sharp presence of Water-attribute Sword Intent, ready to test her new power.

The next moment, a casual vertical flick of a single finger had ended the match without any visible technique or drawn weapon.

Then the shock hit the crowd all at once.

"What was that?!"

"She just awakened Sword Intent and he still...!"

"He didn’t even use a real technique! That was just a finger movement!"

"The force behind it... How is that possible with such a small motion?!"

Ignoring the crowd’s shock, Gray lowered his hand as if nothing of note had occurred.

The faint thread of dark mana at his fingertip had already vanished.

He glanced once toward the barrier where the elimination light was fading, then turned his attention toward the Gloria side of the arena, waiting for whatever came next.

The referee needed a longer moment than usual before his voice finally rang out, still carrying a trace of disbelief.

"V-Victory... to G-Gray Vireux of Clementine’s Sword & Magic Academy!"
