Chapter 310: Shadows Before the Ascent

5 min read

The afterglow lingered in the library tower like a heavy crimson fog. The three of them lay tangled together on the wide cushions—sweat-slicked skin, cum, and the faint scent of sex clinging to everything. Luna was curled against Lucifer’s chest, still breathing hard, her body trembling with exhaustion and satisfaction. Ella lay on his other side, one leg thrown possessively over his thigh, fingers tracing idle patterns across his abs. For a long moment, none of them spoke. The only sound was their slowing heartbeats and the distant hum of the mana reactors far below the palace.

Lucifer stared at the ceiling, crimson eyes distant. The weight he had been carrying since the dream with the goddess pressed down on him heavier than ever. He couldn’t delay this anymore.

"I have to leave," he said quietly.

The words cut through the warmth like a blade.

Luna lifted her head first, eyes widening. "What?"

Ella’s fingers stilled on his skin. She pushed herself up on one elbow, sharp gaze locking onto his face. "Explain."

Lucifer sat up slowly, gently disentangling himself. He ran a hand through his silver-white hair, shadows flickering around his shoulders as if reacting to his unease.

"The Collector—the one I fought in the Shattered Coast. She wasn’t just some soul hoarder. She’s a fallen goddess. A Seeder. She claims the Progenitors were her experiments... her seeds. And she says I’m the first one to actually bear fruit." He paused, jaw tight. "She offered me a path. Power. Godhood. Real godhood. But it means leaving. Training with her. Stepping into places even the Convocation fears."

Luna’s face crumpled. She pulled the discarded robe over her bare chest, suddenly shy again. "You’re... leaving us? After everything? After you just got Francisca back, after we—"

Her voice broke. Tears welled up.

Ella was quieter, but her expression was stormier. Anger flashed in her eyes, followed quickly by something deeper—pain. "How long?"

"I don’t know," Lucifer admitted. "Weeks. Months. Years in whatever realm she takes me to. Time doesn’t work the same there." He reached out, cupping Luna’s cheek with one hand and Ella’s with the other. "I don’t want to go. But if I stay... whatever is coming—the goddess’s sister, the returning presence she fears—it will destroy everything we built. The realm. All of you. I have to get stronger. For us."

Luna leaned into his touch, tears slipping down her cheeks. "We’ve waited a century for you to bring Francisca back. Now you’re leaving again? It’s not fair, Luce."

"I know." His voice was rough. "I hate it. But staying weak isn’t an option. Not anymore."

Ella was silent for a long moment. Then she exhaled sharply and leaned forward, pressing her forehead to his.

"Damn you," she whispered. "I want to be angry. I want to tie you to this bed and never let you leave. But... I understand." Her voice cracked slightly. "You’ve never been the type to sit still while threats gather. That’s why you’re our king. That’s why we love you."

Luna nodded, wiping her eyes. "Just... come back. Promise you’ll come back to us. To all of us."

Lucifer pulled them both close, kissing Luna’s forehead, then Ella’s lips. "I promise. No matter how long it takes. This realm is mine. You are mine."

They stayed like that for a while—holding each other in the quiet aftermath. The sadness and anger were there, raw and real, but so was the understanding. They had always known their king carried burdens heavier than empires.

Eventually, Ella pulled back. She looked at him seriously, brushing a strand of hair from his face.

"Before you go... there’s someone you need to talk to. Properly."

Lucifer raised an eyebrow.

"Vina," Ella said. "She loves you. Has for years. Even after she once tried to kill you—back when everything was chaos and loyalties were still being tested—she made up for it a hundred times over. She and Rey have been your shadow guards. Silent. Loyal. Deadly. She’s stood in the dark for you, Lucifer. Protected you when you didn’t even know you needed it."

Luna nodded softly. "She deserves to know where she stands. Whether you’re turning her down gently... or giving her some hope. Don’t leave her hanging in limbo while you ascend to whatever godhood waits for you."

Lucifer was quiet. He remembered Vina—the fierce, quiet warrior who had once drawn a blade on him in the early days of his rise. The same woman who had later taken arrows meant for him, who patrolled the darkest corners of the empire without complaint. Rey, her brother, was always at her side. Their loyalty was absolute.

"You’re right," he said finally. "I owe her that much. I owe all of you clarity."

Ella smiled faintly, though it didn’t reach her eyes. "Good. Talk to her tonight. Then come back to us. We still have a few hours before the realm wakes up and you have to start saying the harder goodbyes."

Luna pressed a soft kiss to his shoulder. "We’ll be waiting. Always."

Lucifer held them tighter, committing the feel of their bodies, their warmth, their love, to memory. The goddess’s path waited in the darkness beyond the palace, but for now, in this tower, he was still theirs.

He would speak with Vina before dawn.

And whatever he decided—rejection or hope—he would face it like the king he was.

The crimson moon continued its slow arc across the sky, indifferent to mortal hearts and divine ambitions alike. But in the library tower, three hearts beat in sync for a little while longer, stealing every second they could before the ascent began.
