"Secretary Ji, you have been working for Adrian for a long time.""Yes."
"And you know almost everything about him?"
Ji Yan took a turn to the left as he beamed, hearing that, "Of course."
Sitting in the backseat, Ella nodded, "Then, tell me, why was he meeting Lana? How do they know each other?"
The black sedan suddenly zig-zagged on the road as Ji Yan momentarily lost control over the steering wheel.
When Ella agreed to return to the Eve Mansion with Ji Yan, she decided she would keep calm on the way and talk to Adrian only when she came face to face with him.
Her trust in him had wavered for some moments but eventually, it refused to budge.
She realized she trusted him too much to question his loyalty to her. So, the only solution was to ask him when they met.
Yet, something remained unsettled in her heart.
It was a feeling she couldn’t dismiss.
It wasn’t just the discomfort or questions that arose from her encounter with Esther. Rather, it was something different.
Ella had a feeling that there was something extremely wrong. Like she was a puppet at the hands of someone who was orchestrating the entire show.
"Secretary Ji, you have known me for a while now. I’d appreciate if you’d be straightforward about the things with—"
"Miss Yu, careful!"
A sudden shout from Ji Yan startled Ella.
But before she could budge, her entire body swerved to the side, her head smashing against the glasspanes that shattered by the impact.
Through her blurry vision, she spotted a speeding black truck approaching in their direction.
And in the background, there was Ji Yan’s concerned voice.
"Miss Yu!"
"Miss Yu, stay awake!"
Ella’s previous injuries seemed to have ruptured. And now the glass shards pricked half her body, rendering unbearable agony.
It was painful. It took her back to her previous life when her body was being chewed upon by countless rats left alone in that small prison with her.
No matter how Ji Yan changed direction, the truck seemed to swerve that way, blocking their way.
10 more seconds and it would smash into them.
Ella’s eyes fluttered close and open.
And just in the moment it took her to blink, a flash crossed her vision.
The late afternoon sun was suddenly obliterated by a flash of metallic blue overtaking.
The sleek, low-slung sports car was a blur of velocity, its engine screaming a high-pitched whine that cut through the traffic noise.
The titan-sized delivery truck ahead began to brake, its massive taillights flaring, but the sports car wasn’t stopping as it headed straight toward the truck.
In the next moment, it was a catastrophic, soul-shaking sound, a thunderous crunch that sounded less like metal and more like a massive tree snapping in half.
The front end of the blue sports car shattered instantly, transforming from a sleek machine into a tangled wreck.
Sparks flew in a blinding, fiery blizzard of molten steel, erupting from the spot where the two vehicles merged, dancing violently into the air like demonic fireflies before falling onto the highway.
The friction generated so much raw heat that the air around the collision seemed to shimmer.
The impact spun the sports car like a top, hurling it away from the truck.
The car skidded sideways, tearing a glowing scar into the asphalt, leaving behind a trail of black rubber and oil.
For a moment, there was a deafening ringing silence.
Wisps of smoke started rising from the crushed front hood of the sports car, leaving the highway a scene of violent, broken metal and shivering air.
"Secretary Ji..." Ella whispered, barely conscious at this point.
But there was no response from the man ahead.
Just before Ella lost consciousness, she heard Ji Yan’s faint voice, leaving his throat in soft stutter, "S-Second Master..."
...
"Ella... Ella..."
Ella’s eyes snapped open, registering a vast expanse of white around her.
"You are finally awake," Ruby’s face zoomed in front of her vision, the concern in her eyes so obvious, "The doctors said you will be awake soon but..."
"Where is Adrian?" Every word seemed to tug at her vocal chords but Ella did not stop speaking, "Is he awake yet?"
Ruby froze.
Ella pushed herself up, only to fall back on the bed due to the syringes still attached to her body.
"Ella!" Ruby’s eyes widened when Ella pulled off all the needles and got out of the bed on unsteady steps.
Ruby stepped forward to support the woman but Ella had already stepped past her, barely attentive of her surroundings.
At her first step, her feet seem to have frozen upon the touch of the cold hospital floor.
But soon, Ella did not feel the coldness anymore. All that remained was the numb spreading through her heart.
The events that occurred before the incident revolved in her head, the dots swirling in an array before they started connecting.
And suddenly her footsteps halted.
Kade stood in front of the ICU, at the end of the hallway. Ji Yan stood beside him.
Old Master King and Old Madam King sat outside on the waiting chairs. Ronan seemed to be explaining something to them as he held a file in his hand.
’Second Master’
Ella realized that she hadn’t misheard it. Ji Yan indeed addressed Adrian just before she lost consciousness.
But Adrian was not in their car, which only meant he was the person driving that sports car.
"Ella, wait! You can’t just rush in like that..." Kade held onto Ella the moment she bolted towards the door.
All the people present in the hallway looked up at her.
Ronan frowned as he approached Ella.
Although there was his usual annoyance towards her showing on his face, one could easily see his concern as well.
"Your wounds haven’t healed properly yet. Don’t run around like that..." His gaze shifted to her bare feet before he told Kade, "Get her a pair of shoes..."
"How is he?" Ella turned to Ronan, inhaling a shaky breath.
Ronan is calm. Everyone is so calm, unlike how she used to see it in her dreams.
It implied one thing.
