These past few days, he’d already been looking around Kyoto for promising young men for Bella Green. It didn’t matter if their abilities were a bit lacking; the most important thing was that they’d be good to his granddaughter.
If one of them could even marry into the Lawrence Family, that would be the best.
He’d already found a few he was satisfied with and was just waiting to talk to Bella about it, let her meet them.
But before he could even bring it up, Mason Bennett came knocking again.
And he wanted to sweet-talk his granddaughter away.
How could Old Master Lawrence possibly be okay with that?
Mason naturally sensed Old Master Lawrence’s attitude toward him, and he obviously knew why.
He sighed inwardly, then greeted the old man with a respectful, humble posture.
"Hello, Grandpa Lawrence, I’m here to pick up Bella."
"Hmph, Bella is my granddaughter, her surname is Lawrence. This is the Lawrence Family home, which means this is her home. Where exactly are you taking her?"
Old Master Lawrence’s tone was clearly unfriendly, a far cry from his attitude last time.
Mason didn’t get upset; rare for him, there was even a faint smile at the corner of his lips.
"Of course this is Bella’s home, but Bella and I are engaged, and we’re about to get married. My home will naturally be her home too."
The words sounded nice enough, but they made Old Master Lawrence instantly bristle.
"Married!" The old man’s voice shot up, as if he’d been badly startled. "Married to who? Who agreed to let you two get married?"
Bella had just come downstairs when she heard Old Master Lawrence’s booming shout.
She didn’t even bother with her luggage and hurried over at a jog.
Seeing the old man’s mustache practically standing on end, she felt a little embarrassed.
"Grandpa, what’s going on?"
"This kid says he wants to marry you?"
Bella didn’t understand why his reaction was so big, but she still nodded, as honest as ever.
"No. I don’t agree." Old Master Lawrence said angrily.
This was the first time Bella had ever seen this old man lose his temper so badly.
All along, the impression Old Master Lawrence gave her had been one of steady composure and deep authority.
He always carried himself with the calm ease of someone at the top.
But right now, he didn’t look any different from an ordinary old man.
Mason knew the old man was in a fit of anger and didn’t talk back. Instead, he gave the elder a deep bow, his expression solemn and serious.
"Grandpa Lawrence, something did happen between Bella and me before, and I let her suffer for it. That was my fault. I promise nothing like that will ever happen again. I truly love Bella. I’m willing to spend the rest of my life cherishing her, taking care of her, and never letting her suffer even the slightest grievance ever again. I hope Grandpa Lawrence can give me this chance, to let me take care of Bella for a lifetime."
The man’s voice was steady and powerful, firm like an oath. His gaze was open and direct as he looked at Old Master Lawrence, accepting his scrutiny and judgment.
This was the first time Bella had heard Mason speak this seriously and say something like that.
All at once, her chest felt warm, and she couldn’t stop the corners of her lips from lifting. Her gaze on Mason was soft and intent.
It was as if she wanted to etch the way he looked at this moment deep into her eyes and carve it into her heart...
Vivian Thornecroft hadn’t even stepped into the living room yet when he heard this speech, and his whole body froze.
His gaze landed on the smile on Bella’s face; that kind of smile, to him, was blinding.
Marry Mason?
Vivian’s lips curved faintly, and the gold frames of his glasses reflected a shard of cold light under the lamp.
The people in the living room hadn’t noticed Vivian’s arrival.
Mason hadn’t said any flowery words about how once she married him, Bella would live a life of wealth and status that everyone would envy.
Instead, he promised that he would treat Bella well, that he would treasure her on the tip of his heart for the rest of his life...
