Chapter 24: The Third Crisis

6 min read

After a moment of thought, Ye Yun immediately arranged for everyone to rest so they could face the crisis in 17 hours at full strength.

After arranging for the team to rest, Ye Yun began to make his own final preparations for the third crisis.

He checked the shelter’s defenses, confirmed all construction robots were on standby, and ensured every member had adequate weapons and equipment.

He opened the system interface, reviewing the shelter’s status and its resource reserves once more.

Ye Yun knew that although the situation seemed stable, he couldn’t afford to let his guard down in the slightest.

He had to ensure the shelter would safely weather the impending crisis.

Just as he felt everything was ready, his gaze suddenly shifted to Sub-base Two.

A terrifying thought popped into his head.

’Wait a minute... during the first and second crises, all the bases were attacked.’

’So what about the third one?’

’If the third crisis is the same, does that mean Sub-base Two will also be attacked???’

Ye Yun drew a sharp breath. Not only was it possible, but it seemed highly likely.

Sub-base Two currently had three upgraded androids, along with two wastelanders, Lina and Sara. Their combat strength was a far cry from the main base’s.

However, Sub-base Two had always been his gold mine. Since it was also semi-isolated, it was practically impossible for anyone else to find it. As a result, Ye Yun had never given much thought to its combat capabilities.

He had always operated under the assumption that as long as Sub-base Two didn’t stir up trouble, it would be fine.

’But if the third crisis really does affect every shelter, then this is a huge problem.’

As the third crisis approached, Ye Yun began to realize that he might have overlooked an important issue.

If the third crisis affected all shelters equally, then Sub-base Two’s safety would be in jeopardy.

He couldn’t let that shelter suffer because of his oversight.

Ye Yun immediately opened the system to check the status of Sub-base Two.

He noted that while Sub-base Two’s defenses had been upgraded, its defensive capabilities were still lacking compared to the main base.

He immediately issued the order to upgrade the Shelter Entrance.

「Two hours later.」

[Shelter Entrance (Blue)]

[Defense Power: 200]

[Durability: 200,000/200,000] [Repairable]

[Upgradeable]

The completed upgrade to the Shelter Entrance finally gave Ye Yun some peace of mind.

He had invested significant resources into upgrading Sub-base Two; his heart would bleed if it were destroyed.

With the gate upgrade complete, the issue of Sub-base Two’s security was no longer so pressing.

He then opened the exchange and bought some suitable equipment for everyone at Sub-base Two. With that, his preparations were complete.

As for sending reinforcements to Sub-base Two, that was out of the question.

Sub-base Two was important, but the main base was still the top priority.

He couldn’t weaken the main base’s defenses and risk a greater loss for a smaller one.

Besides, based on his assessment, as long as it wasn’t a massive swarm of mutated creatures or a coordinated assault from a hostile faction, the upgraded defenses and current personnel at Sub-base Two should be enough to handle it. Even if they couldn’t win, they could at least hold out for some time.

The main shelter was Ye Yun’s central hub. Most of his resources were stored there, and most importantly, he himself was there.

By contrast, while Sub-base Two was important, the investment of resources and personnel there couldn’t compare to the main base.

Ye Yun knew full well that if the main base were threatened, the survival of his entire network of shelters would be at stake. Therefore, he had to ensure the main base’s absolute security.

As for Sub-base Two, while he couldn’t send more people, he had done everything possible to improve its ability to defend itself by upgrading its defenses and providing better equipment.

As time passed, the tense atmosphere inside the shelter grew thicker and thicker.

Ye Yun ran through all the preparations one last time, then took the opportunity to get a brief rest himself.

He knew that once the crisis began, there might not be another chance to rest.

「Public Chat Room」

Many of the managers who had been lurking finally started to speak up.

[Does any top player know what the third crisis will be?]

[Who knows? It’ll probably be more mutated creatures.]

[I heard we might get attacked by other shelters. No idea if it’s true.]

[Stop scaring yourselves. I’m betting it’s still mutated creatures, just stronger ones than before.]

[I think we should all stop guessing and just focus on preparing. That’s what really matters. I’ve already recalled all my scouting parties and double-checked all my shelter’s defenses.]

[Same here. All my resources are being prioritized for defense and boosting my members’ combat strength. Hope we can get through this one safely.]

As Ye Yun busied himself with preparations, the seconds ticked by.

Everyone in the shelter could feel the tension of the approaching crisis. But thanks to their experience with the previous two, they didn’t show much panic. Instead, they focused even more on their tasks.

The seconds ticked by, and the tense atmosphere within the shelter grew ever thicker.

Under everyone’s nervous gaze, the ten-day countdown finally hit zero.

No. 2, stationed at the observation window, was startled by something that appeared in the distance. He immediately turned to report to Ye Yun:

"Commander, it’s three large mutated creatures!"

Ye Yun: ???!!!

Hearing No. 2’s report, Ye Yun frowned. ’Isn’t that too many?’

"Are you sure? Three of them?"

No. 2 replied with certainty:

"It’s definitely three. One large and two small. They’re approaching our shelter fast. Commander, please give us our orders!"

After a moment’s thought, Ye Yun made his decision.

His shelter now had the strength to handle three large mutated creatures, but a direct confrontation would certainly result in casualties.

He immediately ordered:

"Bena, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, you four will attack the strongest one."

"Make it a quick fight! Don’t waste any time!"

Bena nodded:

"Understood!"

"Lanton, Zhou Yiming, Zhou Mei, you three tie down one of the others. Do your best to keep it from interfering with Bena’s team."

"As for the last one, just let it come and chew on the Shelter Entrance. The gate is sturdy; it won’t be a problem for a little while."
