Mirko pushed herself upright, her jaw set like iron. Her pink eyes were bright with unshed tears, but she refused to let them fall. "Hmph! This Knight does not weep! My optical sensors are merely protesting the excessive particulate matter in this ruined cathedral!"
It is not dust, Kuro said softly.
"I have officially classified it as dust!" Mirko drew her heavy sword, pointing the tip directly at the dark altar. "Onward! To the truth! To vengeance! To—"
BRRRRRMMMMMM!
The temple floor violently shuddered.
From the suffocating darkness beneath the massive glass altar, something ancient began to uncoil. The sickening sound of heavy scales scraping across stone echoed through the sanctuary.
"Little Climbers," a voice hissed. It didn’t echo in the air; it slithered directly into their minds—cold, ancient, and entirely devoid of mercy. "You have breached the heart of my master’s kingdom. You have seen the ghosts of our past. You know the dragons did not fight alone. But the Shepherd’s mercy is absolute, and the past is buried. I will ensure you join it."
An Imoogi rose from the dark like a leviathan breaching the ocean.
It was a serpentine nightmare, thirty feet of coiled, corded muscle and obsidian scales. It possessed no wings or limbs—only a terrifying, singular mass that rapidly filled the vertical space of the cathedral. Deep crimson veins pulsed beneath its dark scales, perfectly syncing with the Tower’s heartbeat. Its wedge-shaped head flattened, revealing jaws lined with dagger-length fangs. Its golden eyes burned with the cold, calculating intelligence of a beast that had spent centuries anticipating this exact moment.
"Vanguard! Lock formation!" Nathan roared, stepping in front of Mirko. "The room is too tight for a sprawling assault! Ranged support, stick to the perimeter! Mirko, Golem—pin the head! Elise, freeze the breath attacks! Dillon, Cloudy—blind it! Kuro—find the structural weakness!"
The Imoogi struck with the speed of a falling guillotine.
Its massive jaws snapped down toward the center of the formation. Mirko met the strike head-on, [Impenetrable Fortress] exploding to its absolute maximum. CLANG. The impact rattled the temple foundations, driving Mirko’s boots backward across the floor, but the emerald barrier held firm.
"You are large and entirely too pleased with yourself!" Mirko strained against the immense weight. "I have dismantled Frost Wyrms and corrupted Pyre Wyrms! You are merely a glorified garden snake! Length is no substitute for technique!"
The Imoogi’s response was a breath attack. It wasn’t fire or frost; it exhaled a billowing, dense cloud of grey, paralytic ash. Wherever the ash touched the obsidian floor, the stone instantly calcified and cracked. If it reached their lungs, they would suffocate as their bodies turned to statues.
Derek’s Salamander reacted instantly. Lunging over the shield wall, the beast unleashed a concentrated torrent of white-hot fire directly into the ash cloud. The extreme thermal energy incinerated the paralytic particles mid-air, neutralizing the threat before it could settle over the vanguard.
"The ash is highly flammable!" Derek barked, his voice cutting cleanly through the chaos. "Burn it out of the air!"
"Red Dragon! Burn the sky!" Torren roared. His pyromancers synchronized, erecting a localized dome of fire over the vanguard that flash-fried any encroaching ash.
Deprived of its breath weapon, the Imoogi resorted to brute force. Its massive lower half swept the temple floor like a battering ram, forcing the Climbers to violently scatter. A Silver Drake tank failed to raise his shield in time; the heavy tail caught him squarely in the ribs, launching him into a stone pillar with a sickening crunch. His emergency crystal didn’t trigger—he was alive, but the way his armor crumpled meant he was permanently out of the fight.
"Garrett! Red! Anchor the rear! Do not let it coil around the formation!" Nathan yelled.
"Locked down!" Garrett planted Volcan firmly into the stone while Red’s fleece hardened into absolute armor. As the serpent’s tail whipped back around, Garrett timed the swing. [Impact Strike] met the scales with a thunderous CRUNCH. The tail violently recoiled, and Red caught it on the rebound, ramming its horns deep into the beast’s flesh to pin it to the floor.
Elise stepped into the opening, raising Aurora’s Heart. The Frost Golem lumbered forward, burying its icy fists directly into the pinned coils. CRRRRACK. Absolute zero spiderwebbed across the obsidian scales, violently freezing a massive section of the serpent to the temple floor. The Imoogi shrieked, wrenching itself free, but the localized deep-freeze severely crippled its mobility.
Elise didn’t stop. [Glacial Lance] materialized and fired point-blank into the compromised, frozen scales. The ice shattered, tearing away a massive chunk of the serpent’s natural armor and exposing the raw, pulsing muscle beneath.
Above the chaos, Dillon and Cloudy executed a flawless dive. Cloudy’s static discharge ripped across the serpent’s head—CRACKLE-BOOM—the high voltage causing the beast’s jaw muscles to violently spasm. Dillon chained [Flash Step] directly between the creature’s golden eyes. [Thunder Edge] fell like a judgment from the red sky. KRAK-BOOOOOM. The lightning blade carved a blinding gash across the Imoogi’s left eye.
The serpent let out a sound of pure, ancient agony as the eye ruptured into darkness.
It was exactly the distraction Kuro needed. Relying on [Invisibility], she had slipped through the shadows while the beast was focused on the vanguard. Materializing directly at the base of its skull, she triggered [Blind]. The shadow magic engulfed the serpent’s remaining golden eye, plunging it into absolute darkness.
The Imoogi thrashed wildly, its massive body cracking pillars and shattering the altar. But it was blind, grounded, and bleeding.
Kuro reversed her grip. [Assassinate] drove both daggers deep into the unprotected gap between the heavy skull scales, sinking the shadow-steel directly into the creature’s central nerve cluster. Shink-Shink.
The serpent seized violently.
Nathan stood thirty yards away, Moonlight drawn back to his cheek. He had been holding the [Focus Shot] for a full minute. The Capacitor was entirely empty. The compression charms in his pouch had burned out, crumbling to inert dust. The Leyline Ring was a dim, agonizing hum against his finger. He was running on the absolute dregs of his stamina, his arms violently trembling under the draw weight.
But his vision tunneled perfectly onto the exposed, bleeding gap at the base of the Imoogi’s skull.
Now, Master, Mirko urged through the link, her voice exhausted but laced with iron. Finish it.
Nathan let the string slip. THWOOOOOOOOOM.
The silver light erased the space between them. It punched cleanly through the severed nerve cluster and buried itself deep into the Imoogi’s brain.
The massive serpent froze mid-thrash. Its body went entirely slack, crashing heavily to the temple floor. Its ruined eye flickered one last time, and then the ancient light died completely.
The colossal body rapidly lost cohesion, dissolving into millions of motes of fading grey ash that drifted lazily up toward the churning red sky.
The temple fell dead silent.
[Ding! Imoogi Defeated!]
[Floor 11 Cleared!]
[Level Up! Nathan Cross: Level 49]
[Level Up! Mirko: Level 45]
[Level Up! Kuro: Level 34]
[Level Up! Dillon Briggs: Level 41]
Nathan slowly lowered the bow. His muscles burned with a fierce, hollow ache. His mana was entirely tapped out, leaving him feeling cold and hollowed out. But he was on his feet.
The primary assault group was battered, but the line had held. The Silver Drake tank was being rapidly stabilized by his medics. The Red Dragon pyromancers were chugging restoratives. Derek Stone stood quietly by his Salamander, running a hand over its heated scales.
Nathan turned his attention back to the altar. Mirko and Kuro were standing perfectly still before the mural, staring up at the painted, vibrant ghosts of their forgotten past.
"We were here," Mirko whispered, her voice incredibly soft. "We fought. We bled. We died. And then... we became this. Bound to a UI. Tethered to a Summoner." She turned to look at Nathan, the sorrow in her pink eyes giving way to a fierce, undeniable resolve. "I do not regret it. Being your Knight. Serving as your first. Whatever I was before, whatever they stole from me... I would not trade the life I have now."
Neither would I, Kuro added, stepping to Mirko’s side. Her mental voice was quiet, but it held the strength of tempered steel. The past is a wound. But wounds close. We are not defined by what was done to us in the dark. We are defined by what we choose to become in the light.
Nathan walked over to them. He didn’t offer empty platitudes. He simply stood between them, placing one hand firmly on Mirko’s armored shoulder and the other on Kuro’s back. Together, the three of them faced the mural.
A heavy grinding sound echoed through the temple. Behind the ruined altar, a concealed, spiraling staircase had opened, descending deep into the earth. It glowed with a pure, blinding golden light.
The path to the throne room was finally open.
"Vorlagrath," Seraphine said quietly, stepping up beside Nathan and staring down into the glowing abyss. "The Last King. The boss monster. He’s right down there."
Nathan nodded, his jaw set. "We rest here. Cycle potions. Maximize mana recovery. We go down there at one hundred percent, or we don’t go down at all."
The army settled into the ruined cathedral, catching their breath surrounded by the ghosts of a forgotten war. Outside, the dead city waited in silence. Below, an ancient dragon paced in his cage. And watching over them all was the painted mural—a haunting reminder of everything that had been stolen, and a fierce promise of what was still worth fighting for.
