Chapter 171: Unstoppable Giants

6 min read

The remaining two helicopters immediately climbed higher, trying to put as much distance between themselves and the Behemoths as possible. But the other two giants had already begun moving. One crouched low before driving both hands into the earth. The ground cracked apart as it wrenched an enormous boulder free with brute force. Beside it, the third Behemoth grabbed another towering tree and ripped it from the ground with the same frightening ease.

The warning spread through every radio channel. "Incoming! Incoming!"

The two Behemoths launched their projectiles almost at the same time.

WHOOSH! WHOOSH! The massive boulder streaked through the air and slammed head-on into one of the helicopters.

BOOM! A massive fireball erupted across the night sky as the aircraft exploded instantly, leaving no chance for its crew to send a distress signal.

The last helicopter barely managed to avoid the incoming tree, but the enormous trunk clipped its tail rotor.

CRUNCH! The damaged rotor shattered apart.

"No! No, no, no!" The pilot fought desperately against the controls as the helicopter spun violently through the air.

"Mayday! Mayday! We’ve lost control!" The desperate transmission ended in a burst of static.

Seconds later, another explosion echoed across the safe zone as the final helicopter crashed into the ground, sending flames soaring into the night.

Silence swept across the battlefield for a brief moment.

Then... BAM! BAM! BAM!

The three Behemoths continued their slow, unstoppable march toward the western wall, as though destroying the air support had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

"Boys, give it everything you’ve got!" the officer roared, his voice nearly drowned out by the chaos of battle. "Rocket teams, keep firing! Snipers, aim for the eyes! Machine gunners, don’t let those monsters get any closer!"

The entire western defense answered at once.

WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH! Rocket after rocket streaked across the battlefield before crashing into the advancing Behemoths in a series of violent explosions.

Several high-caliber rounds struck one of the giant’s eyes with pinpoint accuracy.

SPLAT! Dark blood burst from the impact, forcing the creature to blink as the damaged eye trembled for a brief moment. But before the soldiers could celebrate, the Behemoth simply opened its eye again.

The wound remained, black blood slowly trickling down its grotesque face, yet the creature continued walking as though nothing had happened.

"Reload!" "Don’t stop firing!" The barrage continued without pause.

Explosions erupted one after another, flames crawling across the Behemoths’ bodies before being swallowed by another relentless wave of bullets. The entire battlefield shook under the constant bombardment, yet the three giants refused to fall.

Then, just a short distance from the western wall... the Behemoths stopped. For a brief moment, the battlefield fell strangely quiet as the three giants slowly lifted their heads toward the sky.

Their mouths began to open. Wider... and wider... Until each horrifying maw was large enough to swallow an entire person whole.

"What are they doing...?" a soldier muttered, unable to tear his eyes away.

The next second... "GRRUUUUAAAAAAAAAA!" The three Behemoths roared at the same time as the sound exploded across the battlefield like an invisible shockwave.

"AAAGH!" The radios erupted into deafening static. Soldiers instinctively dropped their weapons and clutched their ears as unbearable pain pierced through their heads. Several collapsed to one knee, screaming in agony as blood trickled from their ears. Others stumbled backward, their vision blurring while the deafening roar overwhelmed every other sound on the battlefield.

Even those stationed farther behind the wall weren’t spared. Inside the safe zone, on a rooftop overlooking the distant battlefield, Jaxon and the ladies suddenly flinched as the monstrous roar rolled over the city.

Although the defensive wall blocked their view, preventing them from seeing what was happening outside, the sheer force of the sound alone was enough to make everyone’s faces pale.

Cindy instinctively crouched and covered her ears, Isabel winced, her expression twisting in pain. While Natasha and Na-rin quickly pressed both hands against their ears as the roar echoed through the safe zone.

"What... was that...?" Natasha gasped, her voice trembling. Na-rin looked toward the direction of the western wall, uneasiness filling her eyes.

"Jaxon..." she called quietly. "Something’s happening outside."

Jaxon didn’t answer immediately as his eyes were already fixed toward the western wall.

He had heard the massive thudding sounds long before the roar reached them, each one strong enough to make the buildings beneath his feet tremble. He had expected a powerful infected to appear, but judging from the desperate barrage of gunfire and the terrifying roar that had just shaken the entire safe zone, the situation outside had become far worse than he had imagined.

Without saying another word, he took several steps backward.

"Jaxon?" Natasha asked, looking at him in confusion.

He glanced at her briefly, his expression unusually serious. "Stay here. No matter what happens, don’t leave this rooftop."

Before anyone could ask what he meant, Jaxon suddenly sprinted forward. Reaching the edge of the rooftop, he leaped into the air.

His body rolled smoothly as he landed on the roof of the next building, barely losing any momentum before pushing off again. One rooftop after another flashed beneath his feet as he raced toward the western wall, leaving the stunned women staring after his rapidly disappearing figure.

...

Outside the walls, the battlefield remained frozen for only a brief moment after the Behemoths’ deafening roar. Then, without the slightest warning, the three giants lowered their massive bodies and burst forward.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! For creatures nearly ten meters tall, they should have been slow and lumbering. Instead, they exploded into a terrifying sprint, their enormous legs pounding against the ground with enough force to shake the earth.

"They’re charging!" The shout echoed across the defensive line just as one of the armored vehicles found itself directly in the Behemoth’s path.

"Target approaching! Open fire!" The gunner immediately swung the mounted machine gun toward the charging giant and squeezed the trigger.

TRRRRRRRRR! A torrent of heavy rounds slammed into the Behemoth’s chest, ripping away chunks of hardened flesh and splattering thick black blood across the battlefield.

In the blink of an eye, the Behemoth reached the armored vehicle as its enormous arms shot upward before both fists came crashing down with overwhelming force.

BAM! The impact shook the ground as the armored vehicle lurched violently beneath the blow. Its reinforced plating crumpled inward with a deafening screech of twisting steel, the entire chassis sinking under the monster’s unimaginable strength.

"Reverse! Reverse!" The driver’s panicked voice rang out over the radio as he desperately slammed the controls.

But he was too late. The Behemoth raised its fists once more and brought them down with even greater force.

BAM! The second strike completely caved in the vehicle’s roof. Thick armor folded like paper beneath the impact, crushing the entire armored vehicle into a mangled heap of twisted steel before it could move even a single meter.
