Deliberating the choice in her mind for a little while, Alice came to a decision."Let’s use it. I think once the device is done to stabilize the tunnel, I should be able to use this to link back to Feris." Alice sighed. "But that’s only if we’re absolutely sure this is connected to Feris. If there are other things mixed in, it might be hard to find the exact strands connected to her."
With the physical tether found, all that was left was the creation of the device. They had gotten all the information they needed from Alice so instead, she took this time to step outside and catch her breath.
No one stopped Alice as it was clear that seeing the ’statue’ had clearly affected her.
Once she was out, she didn’t hesitate to summon Ruby and hopped onto her back. She flew as high as she could, just before hitting the barrier, and looked for a place to sit.
A spot on the World Tree that gave her a good view of the forest beneath her.
Sitting down, she closed her eyes and felt the wind brush past her.
"Makes you wonder where this wind even comes from." Alice mumbled with a laugh.
’Well... they gotta make it realistic right? They probably took chunks of the world and sealed them in bubbles to make this place. I’m surprised we haven’t seen any scoops taken out in reality.’ Alyss chuckled.
"It’s not like we haven’t. There’s been a few craters here and there. Maybe they were a result of a scooping?" Alice smiled. She didn’t feel like just ’thinking’ her thoughts to Alyss and Cayla.
She just wanted to speak with her own mouth right now.
Then after a light pause, Alice lost her smile.
"What do you think of what Feris did?"
They didn’t know her history so she couldn’t even find a way to say whether or not it was justified.
But even so, the fact that innocents were dragged in already worked against her.
’Depends. Do you mean whether or not I approve or her actions or do you mean what I would consider to be going too far?’ leaned back.
"Hm... both."
"In terms of approval... It’s different to each person. But for someone like her, it must’ve been a big loss for her to attack so indiscriminately. So I would imagine she was probably in a stage of pure unfiltered rage where consequences be damned. In which case, it comes down to a question of how strong the enemy was. If the enemy is strong to the point where she couldn’t consider the consequences...’ Alyss paused.
’Then yes, I would approve. But at the same time, if the enemy wasn’t as strong and she was simply doing it to taunt or make a point against her enemies then no, I would disapprove of her actions.
’Then we have considering whether she’s gone too far or not. I’ll be honest, anything with civilians is too far. But at the same time, you have to consider the danger of the situation. If there is a heinous criminal you know could kill millions on the loose, how far would you go to kill them?’ Alyss folded her arms.
’How much would be considered a worthy price? Would you release your blood through the city? Killing the city to ensure he doesn’t escape. Or would you consider that too much of a cost and wait? What if he kills more? It’s complicated without knowing everything.’
Alice sighed, kicking her legs back and forth.
"The real question is what do you plan on asking Feris when you see her again. Because I’ll be honest, she’ll probably own up to causing the slaughter." Cayla materialised next to Alice and sat down.
"What do I plan on asking her huh?"
Alice wasn’t sure.
She had little to no connection with those that died so prioritising that over her current connection was... impossible.
But at the same time, she wasn’t exactly friends with Feris. At least, Feris might not see them that way.
Neither of them spent enough time with the other and the only thing Alice had been giving her was headaches.
Even so, Alice would like to believe that they’re close enough to the point where it would be normal for Alice to worry about her well being.
Even if part of it may stem from the fact that the Void was now in shambles and it was having a bad affect on reality.
Whatever it was, Alice needed to face it head on. That way, when they meet again, she’ll be able to face Feris with little doubt in her heart.
Whether she supports or denies Feris’s actions should be made clear.
Taking a deep breath, Alice stood up.
"I’m just running away from the decision." Alice concluded.
If she truly considered herself to be Feris’s friend, what she should be doing right now was to find out the truth and drag her friend back to her side.
If she’s down the wrong path, pull her back.
"Since we have a physical tether, let’s try use my Revenant Recollection on it. If we can find some information on what happened back then, it might clarify a few things." Alice suggested as Cayla nodded.
Returning back to Alice’s mental world, Cayla pulled up several records that might help Alice find the right time period.
Summoning Ruby, Alice made her way back down to the base as they were surprised she came back so soon.
They half expected her to take half a day to properly prepare herself but that wasn’t the case at all.
"Where is the physical tether located?" Alice asked as the old lady glanced over to one of the staff.
"Erm... from our records, the ’statue’ is located in a pretty remote area of Extalia. There does seem to be a World Tree root nearby but due to the erm... damages in the past, we’ll have to be a little further out. The space is a little unstable so you’ll need to be careful about spatial fissures disrupting the link between surface and Void." The staff flipped through the notes.
"Disrupting the link?" Alice raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, absolute kill zones unless you have defence against spatial fissures or ways to ensure you’re not torn apart. Think of it as lingering traces of battle that the world struggles to regulate even now. Especially with the lack of a realm ruler of the surface realm." He explained.
"Unfortunately, due to the nature of these traces, we can’t exactly link them back to Feris. I don’t even know why..." He rambled but quickly shook his head.
Alice furrowed her brows.
Even with the attacks she does now, the world would self repair rather quickly. Gaps in space would be mended in mere seconds with nothing left behind.
Hell, even Void Axis didn’t leave a permanent mark!
That was the strongest attack she could accomplish. A slash that took advantage of the connection between realms to unleash a slash that bisects the world.
An attack inspired by Kazira’s own interpretations and yet... neither of them could leave a permanent mark.
But that was exactly what Feris had achieved.
Alice had to admit... A part of her was now curious as to what exactly Feris had done when she went on her rampage.
What kind of power did she tap into to destroy the world in such a manner?
"Why don’t you leave that with me. I’ll go collect and statue while also tracing the history of what had happened." Alice suggested as the staff nodded his head.
After letting Alice know about which Root Gate they needed to use, he went back to work while the group made their way over.
"Did you notice something that he said while telling you about the traces?" Allura smiled while walking next to Alice.
"Hm? Erm... what do you mean?" Alice tilted her head.
"Remember carefully with what he said."
Frowning, Alice closed her eyes.
"Is it something about why he can’t link them back to her?"
Allura nodded her head.
"Now think to exactly what would cause that level of damage. Or rather, what would be required for the traces to be linked back to her?" Allura asked.
Alice fell silent once more.
First of all, for her to track someone using Cayla, she would need to know exactly what their energy looks like. Only then, can she filter through the countless strands connected to an object or trace.
While useful, if she didn’t know what she wanted to look for, her vision would be dominated by a sea of colours with no end in sight.
But if a trace couldn’t be linked back to Feris...
"She must’ve severed it somehow." Alice frowned.
"Exactly. But she doesn’t have the power of severance does she? She’s the Lady of the Void. So, the question now becomes this. How did she erase the connection? What level of power must she use?"
"!!!"
Alice’s eyes widened.
"Seems like you know. In the past, during her rampage, Feris had indeed tapped into the power of Oblivion." Allura confirmed as Alice’s heart pounded against her chest.
All along, she was joking and annoying a woman who could erase her without a single trace left behind.
But just as Alice came to this conclusion, there was something else on her mind.
"Wait... how are you so confident that she did? What if she used something else?"
"Of course I’m confident." Allura blinked.
"How long do you think I’ve been alive for? I was there when it happened."
"???"
