Chapter 829: 418: Fifty Shades of Gray (Second Update, Seeking Recommendation Tickets)

4 min read

The airport was bustling with people, some were there to pick up, others to see off. Lawrence Winters had cut her smooth long hair short, making her face appear smaller, looking no bigger than a palm, resembling a seventeen or eighteen-year-old high schooler just going abroad for college.

She wore a baseball cap and an outfit that blended into the crowd, went to check in two large suitcases, and after going through a complex security check, finally arrived at the waiting room for her flight. She found a spot where she could charge her phone and sat quietly by herself playing with her phone.

She had applied foundation that was darker than her actual skin tone, making her look like an Asian who had overdone tanning, a bit dirty looking.

This kind of appearance for Asian women was more common overseas.

Because white people liked the sun-tanned bronze skin, Asians who liked to follow trends would often go for sunbathing too.

Unfortunately, Asians don’t end up with a healthy tan after sunbathing, but rather a color that looks messily unwashed.

Every time Lawrence saw those people, she always wanted to scrub their faces several times with soap.

Now, after dressing up like this herself, she felt quite satisfied.

Because this was a protective color, like a drop of water falling into the vast ocean of Asians overseas, invisible.

She waited half an hour until the ground crew began calling them to line up for boarding.

Different levels of seating had different lines, and boarding order was also different.

The first-class line was the shortest and boarded first.

Then the business class passengers.

Finally, it was the economy class.

The economy class queue was the longest, and naturally had the most people.

This time, Lawrence had bought an economy class ticket and was patiently waiting in the crowd to board.

After getting on, she walked back to almost the rear of the plane to find her seat, and stored her carry-on luggage and a backpack in the overhead compartment.

She took out an eye mask and noise-canceling earplugs from her small carry-on bag and got ready to sleep.

Though the plane was large, there were too many people in economy class, so the seating was quite cramped.

Three seats connected together in a row, she sat by the window, with two fat men sitting beside her, making her somewhat uncomfortable.

Luckily, she had made her face black and yellow, so she didn’t have to worry about being harassed.

The two fat men didn’t have any intention of bothering her, each busy with their phones, saying their last goodbyes to family or friends.

After the plane took off into the high-altitude stratosphere, Lawrence quickly fell asleep.

Although the roar of the engines in the economy class was deafening, Lawrence was indeed tired, and the noise-canceling earplugs worked very well.

She slept nearly the entire way, even skipping the three meals provided on the plane.

During the twelve-hour flight, she slept for almost eleven hours.

She woke intermittently but after blankly staring for a while, would quickly fall asleep again.

Finally, when the plane arrived at New York Airport, she fully awoke.

When she left, it was three p.m. domestic time, and arriving at New York Airport, it was still three p.m. the same day.

Since the time difference between the two places was exactly twelve hours, the time didn’t change at all, as if she had magically gained twelve hours in life.

Of course, this was an illusion.

Coming out of New York Airport, she looked up at the sky.

Hmm, it wasn’t any bluer than the sky back home.

The asphalt road was potholed and mismatched in colors, appearing like it had undergone many repairs, just like the pants poorly mended by a clumsy woman for her family, barely covering the embarrassment.

There were many taxis at the airport, but also very expensive.

Newly arrived, Lawrence didn’t want to attract attention, so dragging two large suitcases, she used an English accent with a Japanese tone to negotiate a fare with an Indian-accented taxi driver, and took a ride to New York’s famed Chinatown.

This was where she’d be living for the upcoming days.

While she was still back home, she had already booked a room at a small roadside hotel here.

This small hotel wasn’t chosen randomly, she had used calculations from "The Book of Changes" to figure out this hotel would be a good start, before specifically booking a room.

The taxi driver dropped her off at the hotel entrance, and when she got out of the car, he even helped her remove her suitcases from the trunk.

Lawrence gratefully gave him a generous tip.

The driver was happy and gestured excitedly, "Be careful here... these Chinese are quite formidable... all know Kung Fu..."

Lawrence: "..."

She smiled politely, bowed a ninety-degree bend, "Thank you very much."
