Chapter 858: What kind of door?

11 min read

A door. Not a passage. Not a fissure. Not an accidental path opened by unstable magic. A door. The difference seemed small to any ordinary person, but everyone there had already heard enough information about the Outer Sepulcher to understand that this was much worse.

Seris was the first to speak.

"What kind of door?"

Hercules looked at the ring between his fingers, as if the answer were trapped in some layer he could feel, but could not describe with pretty words. He did not look comfortable with it. Not because he was afraid, but because the trail did not behave like a common track. It was like trying to follow footprints in dark water.

"I do not know the name," he said. "But it is not a door Frey opened because he wanted to."

Freya took a step forward. "Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Hercules raised his eyes to her. "Because the feeling in the ring is not choice. It is resistance."

Freya fell silent.

Aphrodite moved a little closer to her, but without touching. The tension between the two still existed, but now it was smaller than their shared concern. Freya was trying to keep control, and Aphrodite noticed every small failure in her breathing.

Hercules continued, "Frey was trying to keep something from passing through. Not trying to enter. He held the door from inside or outside, I cannot tell. But he held it. And for a time, he managed."

Vergil narrowed his eyes. "How long?"

Hercules closed his hand around the ring. "Long enough to become afraid."

The answer made Freya look away.

Sapphire crossed her arms. "Fear does not mean weakness."

"No," Hercules said. "In this case, it means he understood the size of what he was holding."

Seris tapped her fingers against her own arm, thoughtful. "That matches the fragment’s signature. If the concept of life was torn from the weapon, perhaps the passage used Frey’s natural authority to justify itself. Life inside death. Growth inside Helheim. A useful paradox."

"And he tried to stop it," Freya said, her voice low.

Hercules nodded. "Yes."

She took a deep breath.

For an instant, her succubus energy began to rise, warm and trembling, but Freya closed her eyes before it escaped. Her hands clenched into fists. The aura shook, resisted, then receded. It did not disappear. It only returned close to her body.

Aphrodite watched closely. "Better."

Freya opened her eyes and looked at her. "Do not use my brother as a lesson."

"I am not using him. I am saying you improved."

Freya stayed quiet for a second, still irritated, but with no way to refute it.

"Thank you," she said, as if the word hurt.

Aphrodite nodded.

Vergil turned his attention back to Hercules. "Can you follow the trail?"

Hercules looked at the ring again. "I can follow it up to a point. After that, it gets dirty."

"Dirty how?"

"As if several trails had been dragged over one another. Frey, Helheim, something cold, something old, something wolfish, and..." He frowned. "Something that does not seem to have any scent at all."

Seris became serious immediately. "No scent at all?"

"I am not talking about ordinary smell."

"I know."

Hercules looked at her. "It is as if the thing does not want to be recognized by instinct, memory, magic, or fear. It does not exactly hide. It leaves a space where perception slips."

Seris looked at Vergil. "That sounds like influence external to the sector."

Sapphire placed a hand on her spear. "Outer Gods?"

"Or something lesser connected to them," Seris replied. "Maybe a tool. Maybe a creature. Maybe an imported rule."

Aphrodite made a face. "I hate when you talk about rules as if they can walk."

Seris looked at her. "Some do."

"I hate it more now."

Hercules turned the ring between his fingers again, but his expression did not improve. "There is something else."

Freya went rigid. "What?"

"Fenrir."

The entire room grew quieter.

Vergil did not look surprised, only more attentive. Sapphire raised her face slightly. Seris let out a low sigh, as if the list of problems had just gained teeth.

Freya spoke first. "What about Fenrir?"

"I do not know if he found Frey," Hercules said. "But his trail touches the same region."

"You can sense Fenrir through Frey’s ring?"

"Not directly. But Frey felt him." Hercules closed his eyes again, holding the ring tightly. "Wolf. Broken chain. Rage. Not against Frey. Against the door."

Vergil watched everyone’s reaction.

Hela had said Fenrir had disappeared, although with Fenrir, disappearance could simply mean acting on his own. Now Frey’s trail indicated something tied to the wolf. That made the situation less clear, not more.

Sapphire said, "So Fenrir may have tried to attack the passage."

"Or something on the other side," Seris said.

Hercules opened his eyes. "He tried to bite."

Seris blinked. "Bite what?"

"The door."

For an instant, no one answered.

Aphrodite looked at Vergil. "Is that something someone can do?"

Vergil answered honestly, "If it is Fenrir, maybe."

Hercules nodded. "That is what I felt. It was not a metaphor."

Seris brought a hand to her face. "Of course Loki’s son tried to bite a conceptual passage older than the death routes. Why not?"

Sapphire let out a short laugh. "Could that have helped?"

"It may have delayed it," Hercules said. "Or made it worse."

Freya closed her eyes. "Does Fenrir know Frey?"

Hercules shrugged. "I do not know."

Aphrodite answered, "All the ancient Norse know each other in some way. That does not mean they like one another."

Sapphire looked at her. "Are you speaking from experience?"

"Yes."

Freya opened her eyes. "Frey is not an idiot. If he tried to hold a door, it is because he knew something horrible would pass through. And if Fenrir attacked that same door..."

"Then the door was a threat large enough to draw both their attention," Vergil completed.

"Or it was a trap for both of them," Seris said.

Freya gripped the arm of the sofa beside her with enough strength to make the wood creak. Aphrodite noticed and, this time, lightly touched her hand. Freya looked at the touch as if she did not know whether to accept or refuse it. In the end, she did not pull away.

"Breathe," Aphrodite said.

"I am breathing."

"Badly."

Freya released the air with irritation, but obeyed.

Hercules observed the scene without comment. Then he raised the ring. "I can follow it better if we are closer to Helheim."

Vergil looked at him. "Here is not enough."

"No. The trail crosses too many layers. Salem has strong magic, but also a lot of noise." Hercules looked sideways at a chained grimoire trembling in the corner. "And strange books."

Seris looked offended. "My books are cultured."

One of the books whispered something obscene.

Seris pointed at it. "Except that one."

Hercules continued, "Near Helheim, I can separate it better. Frey, door, Fenrir, passage. Here, everything reaches me as an echo."

Freya stood immediately. "Then we go."

"No," Vergil said.

She turned to him. "Vergil."

"We are not entering Helheim now."

"You heard him."

"I did. And I also heard Hela say the routes are unstable, that Valkyries lost contact, that ancient passages are calling, and that things there listen to bonds. You do not have enough control yet."

Freya clenched her jaw.

"He is right," Aphrodite said.

Freya turned her face to her, irritated. "Of course you would say that."

Aphrodite did not retreat. "Yes. Because it is true."

Freya’s energy trembled again, but she held it.

Sapphire watched in silence. There was discreet approval in her eyes, though she said nothing.

Hercules carefully placed the ring on the table. "Entering desperately into a place that wants to use bonds is a terrible idea."

Freya looked at him. "You too?"

"Especially me." Hercules leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "I have done plenty of stupid things because someone I loved was in danger. Some worked. Many cost dearly. If you want to save your brother, do not hand the enemy the part of you it wants to pull."

Freya went quiet.

The sentence did not come with superiority. It came with experience. That made it harder to reject.

Vergil looked at Hercules for a second, then at Freya. "Today, control. Safe tracking. Preparation. Then Helheim."

Freya took a deep breath.

"How long?"

Seris answered before Vergil. "One day to seal the ring and the fragment without destroying the trail. A few hours to assemble protections against bond imitation. A few more to prepare Freya not to try to kiss, bite, seduce, or hug anything that speaks with her brother’s voice."

Freya looked at Seris indignantly. "I would not bite."

Hercules raised his hand. "In desperation, biting happens."

Aphrodite looked at him. "You are not helping."

"I am being honest."

Sapphire smiled. "I like him."

Aphrodite sighed. "Of course you do."

Freya covered her face with one hand. "This is becoming humiliating."

Vergil spoke calmly, "It is becoming useful."

She lowered her hand and looked at him.

He continued, "Humiliation passes. Dying by impulse does not."

Freya stared at him for a few seconds. Then let out a weak, bitter laugh. "You have a horrible way of comforting."

"I was not trying to comfort you."

"I noticed."

Aphrodite touched Freya’s shoulder. "He does that. Sometimes it works."

Freya took a deep breath and, finally, nodded. "One day."

Vergil held her gaze. "One day."

"Then Helheim."

"If everything is ready."

"Vergil."

"If everything is ready."

She pressed her lips together, but nodded again. "Fine."

Seris clapped once. "Excellent. I love when everyone chooses not to die immediately. It is rare and refreshing."

Alice, who had been silent for far too long, looked at Hercules. "Are you going into Helheim?"

Hercules looked at Aphrodite.

Aphrodite looked at him with that expression that did not ask, only reminded him she had already asked.

He sighed. "I am."

"Even though it is a Norse problem?" Alice asked.

"My sister asked."

"Is that enough?"

Hercules looked at Aphrodite, and his expression became lighter for an instant. "For me, yes."

Aphrodite smiled.

Vergil observed that exchange. There was something simple there. Not easy, but simple. Aphrodite trusted Hercules with a part of herself she did not give to Olympus. Hercules answered her without hesitation because, to him, her request came before politics, pantheon, or danger.

Freya observed too.

And thought of Frey again.

If Frey was somewhere, wounded, holding an impossible door, perhaps he too was waiting for someone to come because the bond was enough. Not as weakness. As promise.

Hercules picked up the ring again and returned it to Freya.

"Keep it. Seris needs to seal it, but until then, keep it with you. Do not let anything else touch it."

Freya took the ring with both hands. "Did you see anything else?"

Hercules hesitated.

Vergil noticed.

"Say it."

Hercules looked at Freya. "It was not only fear. He was angry."

Freya closed her fingers around the ring. "Angry at whom?"

"At himself."

The answer struck deeper than she expected.

Freya went still.

Hercules continued, "I do not know why. But I felt guilt. As if he thought it was his responsibility. As if he had opened the first crack by accident, then tried to keep it from becoming a door."

Seris became very serious. "That is important."

Sapphire looked at the map still on the table. "Frey may have found the passage before being used."

"And tried to study it?" Aphrodite suggested.

Freya shook her head. "Frey is not that kind of scholar."

"But is he curious?" Hercules asked.

Freya stopped.

The answer was on her face.

"Yes," she said, lower. "He is."

Vergil spoke, "Curiosity is enough to open the wrong thing."

Seris nodded. "Especially if the thing on the other side wanted to be found."

Freya held the ring against her chest. "He would not do that out of arrogance."

"Maybe not," Hercules said. "Maybe he did it because he thought he could help."

Freya closed her eyes.

That sounded too much like Frey.

And it hurt because of that.

Aphrodite moved a little closer to her. "We will find him."

Freya opened her eyes, staring at her.

"You do not know that."

"No," Aphrodite said. "But I know we will try properly."

Freya stayed silent.

Then nodded.

Seris had already begun moving instruments across the table. "I need the ring soon. I also need no one to panic, no one to touch the dead fragment, no one to make impulsive promises to the dead, doors, or missing brothers, and please, no one say Loki’s name three times in a ritual room."

Hercules looked at her. "Does that summon him?"

Seris stayed quiet for half a second.

"I do not know. But why risk it?"

Sapphire laughed.

Vergil ran a hand over his face.

Aphrodite returned close to him, resting a hand on his arm. "See? Hercules already helped."

"He brought more problems."

"He brought information."

"That too."

Hercules heard and smiled from the corner of his mouth. "You complain like someone who has already decided to go."

Vergil looked at him. "You speak like someone who has already decided to come."

"My sister asked."

"Aphrodite asked me too."

Hercules looked at Aphrodite, then at Vergil. "Then you understand."

Vergil did not answer immediately.

Aphrodite watched the two with a small smile. So did Sapphire. Seris looked far too interested in that simple masculine understanding, made of few words and decisions already taken.

At last, Vergil nodded once.

"I understand."

Hercules nodded back.

There was no friendship there yet.

But there was something functional.

Respect, perhaps.

Or, at minimum, the perception that both knew exactly what it meant to move when someone important called.

Freya took a deep breath, the ring closed between her hands, and looked at the table where the dead fragment remained held in magical protections.

Helheim waited.

Frey might be waiting.

And now, for the first time, the search had a route, a team, and a deadline.

One day.

After that, they would enter the realm of the dead.
