I teleported to a spot away from other people, but to be honest, I was at a complete loss. My illness was suddenly cured, and now I had a body I could actually walk around in without growing short of breath. Apparently, I could also now fight without difficulty and use magic, too. Although, I had to wonder if I’d be mentally capable of squaring off against someone.
At any rate, I decided I needed a place where I could sit and carefully think about things. I didn’t even know what I looked like right now or what else I was capable of. I’d chosen to travel around this otherworld, but other than that, I hadn’t made any decisions at all.
I didn’t get a wink of sleep the previous day, because Kyle and I had stayed up all night talking. And I was hungry for the first time in a long while. I wanted a place where I could get some rest and something to eat.
I’d search for an inn and book a room there, then think about what my next move would be. Suddenly, I realized that I’d need money to stay at an inn. “Money…,” I muttered. I’d never had any in this world.
I searched my pockets and realized that a bag was slung over my shoulder. As I stared at it, I remembered Kyle speaking of it with such amusement before he went to rest in peace.
“I’m gonna give you my greatest masterpiece! Take real good care of it. And make sure you thoroughly check the contents!”
Was this the bag he was talking about?
I was incredibly curious about what was inside, but right now I needed money. The bag was made from a coffee-colored fabric, and I found a drawstring pouch inside that was the same color. I opened it in search of something that resembled money. Kyle really had left everything to me…
Now that I’d solved that issue, I racked my brain for any mention of money while I looked for an inn.
According to Kyle’s memories, the money of this world was organized in this fashion:
10 copper dimes = 1 full copper
5 full coppers = 1 half-silver
2 half-silvers = 1 silver
10 silvers = 1 gold
And if you converted that into yen, then it would be something like this:
1 copper dime = 100 yen
1 full copper = 1000 yen
1 half-silver = 5000 yen
1 silver = 10,000 yen
1 gold = 100,000 yen
That was generally how it was, but occasionally there would be fluctuations in the value of the coins. At any rate, the system of currency was different from the one in my old world, but at least I had a general idea of it.
While I went over all of that in my head, I arrived at a building that looked like an inn. I nervously opened the door and went inside. In my past life, I very rarely had gone anywhere except the hospital. There was a woman sitting at what I assumed was the reception desk, so I approached her.
“I’d like to book a room. Are there any vacancies available?” Even though I was nervous, my voice was even, which made me feel relieved. I had successfully stated my business. But for some reason, she didn’t answer me. Puzzled, I repeated myself.
Suddenly she shook her head as if coming back to herself and stared at my face as she answered me. Do I have something on my face? Now I’m worried. “Welcome. A single room is four coppers per night. If you’d like dinner, then it’ll be a half-silver.”
Since I was hungry, I told the woman I wanted a room with dinner included. “I’d like to book a room for three nights.”
“A single room with dinner included for three nights, correct? We require payment in advance, so that will be one silver and one half-silver, please.”
I took the money out of my pouch and handed it to her. She accepted it with a beautiful smile. “Your room is on the second floor right at the top of the stairs, room 201. Please enjoy your stay.” She handed me a key with a broad smile. I thanked her and headed upstairs.
The room was simple, with only a bed, a desk, and a chair, but it was very clean. I sat down on the bed and sighed. I was exhausted, which was to be expected after the dizzying events of the past day. The bed creaked as I looked toward the mirror that was leaning against the wall.
And my reflection surprised me.
Was that really me? My face looked nothing like the old me. But I didn’t exactly look like Kyle, either. But strangely, I was able to accept the face I saw as my own. I didn’t have black hair and eyes, nor Kyle’s golden-brown hair. Instead, it was more of a shiny walnut brown. Kyle’s eyes had been light green, but mine were light violet. Walnut-brown hair and violet eyes…
I stared at my reflection and greeted my new self for the first time. Next, I looked down at my body, which was also completely different. Back in Japan, I’d dreamed about having a healthy physique, but this surpassed that—I was muscular from head to toe. I don’t mean to boast, but I had the ideal body. A smile crept onto my face.
If my younger sister, Kyoka, could see me now, she would shed tears of joy.
I lay down in bed and fell asleep.
It was dinnertime when I finally woke up; I’d been asleep for almost half the day. I finished eating, then returned to my room. I decided to give in to my curiosity and check the contents of the bag. I opened it up and laughed out loud despite myself.
I felt like a child excited to open a present. I’d long forgotten this feeling.
Following Kyle’s instructions, I thoroughly inspected the bag’s contents. “Now let’s see what’s inside…”
I pulled out items one by one. There was a white robe and a black one. Fine clothes that had an air of nobility about them. A cloak… Was there more than just clothes in here? Some looked like things Kyle would wear, but others made me raise a brow, wondering if he had ever put them on at all.
After I’d finished with his wardrobe(?), the next things I pulled out were weapons. A shortsword, a staff, a whip, a bow. And some things I was absolutely sure they wouldn’t sell in stores. I didn’t know if he obtained them from some kind of ruin or made them himself. I wanted to take my time and appreciate them, but I needed to check my inventory first.
