As soon as Maxwell Saxon appeared, he was quickly surrounded. Just as he’d said, these people all seemed to be his friends. The moment they saw him, they greeted him enthusiastically: "Maxwell, what took you so long? We’ve all been waiting for you."
"Yeah, and this beautiful young lady by your side, could she be the one you fancy? Hurry up and introduce her to us."
"Maxwell, you’re really something—got yourself a beauty and still kept her hidden. Only now are you finally bringing her out for us to see."
From beginning to end, Maxwell Saxon faced everyone with a smile. With his arm around Scarlett Yates, he led her into the crowd, his thin lips lifting slightly, his smile elegant and faint: "This is Miss Yates of the Yates Family, Mr. Noah Yates’s eldest daughter, and also my fiancée. She’s a little shy around strangers. With all of you crowding around and staring at her like this, you’re going to scare her half to death."
As he spoke, he turned his head, reached out, and gently brushed aside a lock of bangs that covered half of Scarlett’s brows and eyes. The way he looked at her was both gentle and indulgent, his gaze soft as water, and anyone could see that this time he was truly in love.
He had brought a Miss Green here before, but back then, things had been completely different from how they were now.
"Oh my, Maxwell, look how you’re coddling her. We haven’t even said anything yet and you’re already afraid we’ll scare Miss Yates."
"This is the first time we’ve seen Maxwell treasure someone like this. Don’t worry, really, someone you care about this much—we wouldn’t dare frighten her."
Laughter rippled around them as several women had already circled around Scarlett Yates, naturally taking her arm and peppering her with questions: "So you’re from the Yates Family. Then you know, we’re actually sort of related. My aunt’s sister-in-law’s daughter’s cousin is basically your cousin too."
"I never knew Mr. Yates had such a beautiful daughter. I was just thinking Miss Yates has such extraordinary poise, you must be from a distinguished family. Looks like I was right."
"Miss Yates and Maxwell are such a handsome couple, truly a match made in heaven. Have you decided when the wedding will be? We absolutely have to be there."
Scarlett Yates felt as if she were being tightly encircled by a flock of nagging older relatives.
But Maxwell Saxon showed not the slightest intention of rescuing her. He turned and gave her a glance, his mood seeming quite pleased. The corners of his lips quirked up as he smiled and said to her, "Scarlett, my friends all really like you. In a bit you can have a good chat with them, get to know each other. They’re all very easy to get along with."
His friends were the last people she wanted to get to know.
These people had no idea what was really going on; they were all fooled by Maxwell Saxon’s façade of being a gentleman, and thought she and Maxwell were truly in love with each other.
Scarlett Yates could tell that everyone here was sincerely blessing them, but to her, these blessings felt more like mockery and a joke.
"Miss Yates, you look a few years younger than me. Can I just call you Scarlett? Looking at you is like looking at my own little sister."
"When did you and Maxwell meet? You know, he’s usually so aloof and quiet, like he has no worldly desires at all. We all thought that was just his personality. But he really is different with you; he’s given all of us a shock."
Everyone seemed very interested in how she and Maxwell Saxon had met. They kept asking, one after another. When Scarlett Yates didn’t respond, they assumed she was shy and burst into collective laughter: "Don’t tell us Maxwell used some sort of strong-arm tactics to win you over. That really doesn’t sound like his style."
