Rose Yates had a very sweet mouth, that one soft, syrupy "big brother" she called out was adorable. She tilted her head, fluffy curls spilling over her shoulders, a pink bow headband tied in her hair. Her lips were pink and pouty, her cheeks just as pink and pouty, and the way she tilted her head to look at Maxwell Saxon was simply too cute.
Maxwell glanced at her, then at Scarlett Yates. In front of Rose, he swiftly slipped back into that polished, gentlemanly, fake-virtuous persona. His thin lips curved, his smile as warm and gentle as the sunshine overhead: "You must be Mr. Yates’s youngest daughter? He talks about you all the time."
Rose lit up the moment she heard that, her eyes brightening: "Daddy talks about me to you a lot?"
Maxwell nodded: "He says you’re smart and sensible, a very well-behaved girl."
Rose’s smile turned even brighter. Getting praised, she didn’t bother to be modest at all. She lifted her chin, her face full of proud satisfaction: "My teacher says I’m really smart too."
Maxwell chuckled softly. A man who could sweet-talk women had no problem coaxing little girls either; he handled it just as smoothly: "Miss Rose looks very clever and adorable. You and your sister are alike—you’re both very lovable."
With one line he not only praised Rose, he bundled Scarlett into the compliment as well.
Being praised by a handsome guy—even if he was much older than her—put Rose in a great mood. Her lips curved, and she beamed, extra delighted: "Big brother, you’re really handsome too. You must have tons of girls who like you, right?"
"Who says so." Maxwell let out a soft sigh, a touch of hurt crossing his face. His gaze shifted to Scarlett, his voice faintly gloomy. "Your sister doesn’t like me."
What a shameless, despicable man, actually saying that kind of thing to a child.
Scarlett was furious. Seeing Rose looking really interested, clearly about to press for details, she tightened her grip, tugging Rose around to face away. "Rose, shouldn’t you be hurrying up and practicing the piano? When Dad comes back to check and you still haven’t practiced properly, watch out—he might not even let you eat dinner."
"Come on, come on, go practice the piano."
"But..." Rose turned her head back, looking longingly at Maxwell. "Are we really going to leave that handsome big brother all alone? That doesn’t seem very nice, right? Won’t it look super rude?"
For the arrogant, unruly young lady Rose to actually say something like that was rare.
Scarlett knew exactly what she was thinking. She just didn’t want to leave because she’d seen someone good-looking.
There was no way Scarlett would actually let her stay. Just the thought of Maxwell still standing behind them watching made chills run down her back.
"Rose Yates, you’d better cooperate with me and behave. Don’t lose the ability to walk just because you see a handsome guy. Do you believe me when I say if you dare run back, our deal is off?"
The certain someone who had been turning back three times with lingering reluctance, constantly trying to shake off Scarlett’s hand and run back, suddenly froze, then immediately stopped struggling and obediently followed her away.
Looked like, in Rose’s heart, no matter how good-looking a man was, he still couldn’t compare to her dear dad.
Scarlett held her hand and hurried forward, stepping quickly. After turning past a few rockeries, then crossing a small bridge, and then cutting through a long corridor, Rose finally couldn’t take it anymore and yanked her hand free.
"Hey, where exactly are you going? We’re already far enough from there; we don’t need to keep going, do we?" At ten years old, Rose Yates already knew how to read people’s moods.
