Chapter 1288: I Just Want to Make You Happy

3 min read

She would rather he always pretended to be a hypocrite so that at least she wouldn’t be frightened by the naked emotions in his eyes. But this man only pretended in front of others; in front of her, he didn’t even bother to disguise, showing his true self completely.

He did it on purpose.

Intentionally revealing his feelings for her, so she could clearly and plainly know that he still hadn’t given up on her.

"Perhaps I was a bit too straightforward."

He slightly furrowed his brows: "If you don’t like me being so straightforward, I can approach it differently."

"Maxwell Saxon, haven’t you figured it out yet? This has nothing to do with being straightforward or not. It’s impossible between us."

"Why? Just because you like Matthew Saxon?" He curled his lips into a smile and said indifferently, "Nothing is absolute. Besides, I’ve always liked to challenge the impossible, Scarlett. If you just give me a chance, I’ll make you happy."

"I can give you more than Matthew Saxon ever could."

"But I don’t want it." Scarlett Yates’s hand trembled slightly on the table, biting her lip in anger. She turned her head to look him straight in the eyes, saying word by word, "Maxwell Saxon, even if I’m begging you, will you let me go? With your qualifications, it’s not a problem finding any woman you want. There are countless women better than me in this world. Why won’t you just let me go?"

She began to plead with him desperately.

He was too deeply obsessed, placing too much importance on those childhood memories. What he wanted was just the little girl in his memory, not Scarlett Yates.

She couldn’t understand why he held those memories so dearly, still unable to forget them to this day.

Weren’t childhood memories supposed to fade easily?

Even if some memories linger, they’re just fragmented pieces.

But Maxwell Saxon was different.

He seemed to remember those memories vividly, even recalling small details when he talked to her.

His incredible memory was astonishing and made her feel a tinge of fear.

If not for a deep obsession, how could anyone remember such minute details even after more than twenty years?

Such obsession bordered on pathological.

Normal people wouldn’t be like this.

So, Scarlett Yates truly began to fear a little; if Maxwell Saxon wouldn’t give up his obsession, he might cling to her for a lifetime.

A lifetime... when those three words popped into her head, it was as if a chill seeped into her body, making her shiver.

"Maxwell Saxon, I know you still remember the past, and I know those memories are important to you, perhaps even very beautiful, so that’s why you can’t forget them until now. But I really don’t remember those things at all, not a bit."

"Let the past be the past, okay? We were very young back then, just kids. Whatever was said or done, it shouldn’t be taken seriously."

As she spoke, she was almost crying with anxiety, her eyes turning red, choking as she said, "I’m begging you, Maxwell Saxon, I’m begging you."

"Scarlett, you’re crying?"

Maxwell Saxon’s previously calm and indifferent face suddenly changed. He was stunned for a few seconds, and when he saw her eyes reddened, a surprised expression appeared on his face, "I never wanted to hurt you, Scarlett. I just wanted to make you happy. Is that also wrong?"
