Chapter 58: The Cull

13 min read

Eshiren pushed away from the navigation console. His broken ribs ground against each other. Every subtle movement sent sharp, jagged spikes of agony through his chest cavity, forcing him to breathe in shallow, rapid gasps. The bridge of the Leviathan had descended into total chaos. Veteran Imperial officers sprinted between smoking tactical terminals. They screamed coordinates and telemetry data that made no logical sense. The massive holographic display in the center of the room showed the geometric monoliths of the Entropic Swarm. The massive structures continued their slow, silent march toward the inner system, unbothered by the frantic activity of the mortals in their path.

"Helm!" Krazmakor barked. The younger prince dragged himself back onto the gold-chased command throne. His voice cracked with sheer panic. The terrified tone stripped away the arrogant facade he had carefully maintained during the civil war. "Disengage the orbital tethers! Divert all hyper-core energy to the primary thrusters. We are pulling the fleet back to the capital world."

"My Prince," the helmsman replied. His hands flew across the tactile interface in a blur of desperate motion, bypassing primary relays to force manual control. "The navigation relays are unresponsive. The bio-magical core is refusing the command."

"I am the commander of this fleet!" Krazmakor roared. He slammed his uninjured fist against the heavy adamantine armrest of the throne. The deep purple illumination of his royal signature flickered violently across the bridge, casting long, erratic shadows over the panicked crew. "Override the safeties. Burn the engines if you have to. We are not sitting here waiting to be erased by whatever that thing is."

"I cannot bypass the lock, sire." The helmsman stepped back from his console. He raised his hands in a gesture of pure surrender, staring at the frozen interface. "The local network is dead."

Eshiren limped toward the primary engineering station. He wiped a streak of warm blood from his forehead. The ship’s internal systems were not malfunctioning due to combat damage. A localized mechanical failure would trigger a cascade of secondary warnings, venting coolant and cycling backup power grids. Instead, the tactical screens were going dark one by one. A deep, oppressive crimson glow replaced the standard displays. It was a forced system lockout. He had seen similar overrides used by the Inquisition during sector sweeps in the slums, freezing local technology to trap targets in specific city blocks. This was the exact same brutal tactic, applied on a cosmic scale.

"It isn’t a malfunction," Eshiren said. His voice cut through the rising panic on the bridge, drawing the attention of the senior officers.

The main hololith flared. The image of the approaching Entropic Swarm vanished. A massive, burning sigil replaced the terrifying telemetry. It was a complex draconic crest, forged in holographic fire. It depicted a coiled dragon wrapped tightly around a dying sun. Eshiren recognized the seal. Saelis had shown him the same icon stamped on the execution orders in the restricted archives. It was the personal seal of Kzar-Gorthennakk. The 18th Dragon God. The Emperor of the known universe.

Every console on the bridge locked down simultaneously. Heavy blast doors sealing the primary exits slammed shut with a deafening crash. Then the massive adamantine locks engaged, trapping the crew inside a flying tomb. The Leviathan, along with every other surviving warship in the Azarian sector, had just been hijacked by the Imperial throne room lightyears away.

"Father," Krazmakor whispered. The younger prince sank back into the heavy cushions of the throne. Terrified, the boy looked up at the burning sigil. Searching for salvation in the harsh red light, he hoped for a paternal intervention to carry him away from the monsters in the dark. "He is intervening. He is going to save us."

Eshiren stared at the scrolling data on a secondary monitor. Kzar-Gorthennakk was not sending a rescue fleet. Instead, the Imperial override fed localized spatial coordinates directly into the Leviathan’s hyper-core. The code was turning the dreadnought into a massive gravitational anchor, locking its mass into a fixed point in space.

"He isn’t saving us," Eshiren realized, a cold knot forming in his stomach as the horrific truth set in. "He is using us to stabilize a spatial gate."

Outside the armored viewports, the fabric of reality began to tear.

A massive, jagged rupture opened in the void between Azaria and the encroaching monoliths. The spatial gate was not a clean, organized portal used for standard fleet transit. It was a violent, highly unstable tear in the universe. It bled raw thermal energy into the cold vacuum. The sheer mass of the gate began to bend local space-time around the trapped fleet. Chronometers on the bridge glitched. They ticked backward and jumped forward as the gravitational shear distorted their perception of reality.

"Warning," the ship’s automated voice announced. The tone remained devoid of any emotional inflection, contrasting horribly with the sheer panic of the crew. "Radiant heat levels exceeding structural tolerances. Bio-magical shielding at critical failure threshold. Catastrophic hull failure imminent."

Eshiren shielded his eyes. A blinding, searing white light spilled out of the spatial tear. It was not the red fire-mana typical of standard Dragon combat magic. It was the pure, unfiltered fusion energy of a dying star.

The Emperor had activated the Earthgon Dyson Swarm.

Eshiren had read about the ultimate weapon in the deepest, most restricted archives of the Academy. It was considered a theoretical construct by most lower-tier scholars. A weapon of such apocalyptic scale that it required the sacrifice of entire solar systems to function. The Dragon Empire had spent centuries enclosing a supermassive blue giant star within a localized shell of hyper-dense mana conductors. Millions of slaves had died building the array in the harsh radiation of the corona, their bodies burning to ash to construct the framework. When fired, the weapon channeled the entire radiant output of the star into a single, focused beam of destructive energy. It was a Nicoll-Dyson Laser. It was capable of sterilizing a sector from across the galaxy.

The heat hit the Leviathan.

The thick adamantine hull of the dreadnought groaned heavily under the extreme thermal stress. The temperature on the bridge spiked rapidly. Eshiren felt his skin begin to blister beneath his ruined uniform. The organic circuitry running along the walls hissed and sparked. It caught fire as the ambient heat exceeded biological limits. Bridge officers screamed. They dove for the meager cover of the metal consoles, seeking shelter from the ambient radiation flooding through the viewport.

"The viewports are failing!" the sensor officer yelled. He pointed a trembling finger toward the massive transparent panels dominating the front of the bridge. Hairline fractures spiderwebbed rapidly across the reinforced glass.

If the glass shattered, the radiant heat of the weaponized star would incinerate everyone on the bridge in a fraction of a second. Krazmakor remained paralyzed in the throne. He covered his face with his good arm. He whispered desperate, pathetic prayers to a father who had just anchored them next to a localized supernova. The prince offered no leadership. He offered no defensive magic to protect his loyal crew. He was a broken child wearing a warlord’s armor.

Eshiren forced himself to act.

Ignoring the excruciating pain in his fractured ribs, he sprinted toward the failing viewports. He placed his bare hands directly against the blistering hot glass. The heat seared his palms. The flesh melted and stuck to the pane, but he pushed past the physical trauma. Reaching deep into his hollowed-out core, he searched for the absolute bottom of his reserves. He had drained himself holding the planetary shield, and again stopping Vraek’s execution stroke. There was almost nothing left.

He found a hidden, microscopic reservoir of Golden Magic.

Eshiren funneled the ancient, forbidden power directly into the structural lattice of the reinforced glass. To avoid drawing attention from the Imperial sensors, he did not cast a visible external shield. He simply infused the physical material with the hyper-dense magic. This process reinforced the molecular bonds of the viewport from the inside out, causing golden veins to pulse rapidly through the transparent adamantine. They glowed faintly against the overwhelming white light.

He screamed through clenched teeth. The thermal energy battered against his localized reinforcement. It was like trying to hold back a tidal wave with a wooden plank. Blood poured from his nose, staining his scorched uniform. His muscles seized violently under the strain, threatening to snap his bones.

The Nicoll-Dyson Laser fired.

A beam of pure stellar energy erupted from the spatial tear. It was thicker than the planetary diameter of Azaria itself. The sheer kinetic force of the beam passing the anchored fleet shattered every secondary sensor array on the Leviathan. A deafening, subsonic hum vibrated through the metal hull. It cracked the deck plating. It shattered the teeth of the officers cowering on the floor.

Eshiren held the glass together. The Golden Magic burned through his veins. It acted as the only barrier between the bridge crew and total incineration. He watched through the reinforced pane as the apocalyptic beam lanced across the solar system. It traveled at a significant fraction of the speed of light, illuminating the dark void and erasing the shadows.

It struck the Entropic Swarm.

The impact defied linguistic description. The sheer volume of raw energy colliding with the creeping anti-reality of the monoliths created a localized distortion in space. A massive, silent explosion of blinding white light and jagged purple lightning illuminated the dark void. Space-time stretched and snapped back like a broken rubber band. Eshiren watched the tactical readouts on a surviving secondary monitor.

The beam vaporized the vanguard of the Swarm. Millions of the massive, geometric structures ceased to exist. Overwhelmed and erased by the astronomical output of the dying blue star, the dark, creeping line of the enemy formation broke. A massive gap opened in their ranks. It exposed the empty void behind them.

A ragged cheer erupted from the surviving bridge crew. Veteran officers pulled themselves off the scorched deck plating. Relief drove them to open weeping. The Emperor had intervened. The God of the Dragon Empire had deployed his ultimate weapon and shattered the unkillable enemy. The Empire was supreme.

Krazmakor lowered his arm. A manic, triumphant laugh escaped his cracked lips. "He did it. My father burned them out of the sky. The Empire stands."

Eshiren did not cheer. He kept his bleeding hands pressed tightly against the cooling glass. He stared intently at the tactical readout. His breathing remained shallow and ragged.

The gap in the enemy formation did not hold.

Before the radiant energy of the stellar beam had even fully dissipated, the Swarm reacted. The monoliths did not retreat. They did not attempt to flank the Imperial position. The surviving geometric structures simply shifted. They slid effortlessly into the void left by their vaporized vanguard.

Then, the true horror of the enemy revealed itself.

The monoliths replicated. New structures, identical in size and featureless design, materialized from the creeping darkness. They multiplied with terrifying, mathematical speed. They filled the massive hole in their lines within seconds. Billions of new constructs replaced the millions that had been destroyed. The geometric line of the Swarm reformed. It was unbroken. It resumed its slow, silent march toward the inner system.

The weaponized star had not defeated the enemy. It had merely stalled them.

The Dragon Emperor had sacrificed an entire solar system to carve a temporary hole in a wave that possessed no end. The ultimate expression of Imperial power had bought them perhaps three months of survival. It was a weapon designed to end conventional wars in a single stroke. Against this enemy, it was mathematically insufficient. The Empire could not produce enough energy to win a war of absolute attrition against an enemy that actively consumed reality.

Cheering on the bridge died rapidly. A hollow, crushing despair replaced the brief celebration. Staring at the reformed line of monoliths, the officers realized the fundamental truth of their existence had just been proven false. Dragon fire did not conquer all.

The spatial gate near Azaria’s sun abruptly collapsed. Sealing itself, the violent rupture in reality cut off the blinding light of the Earthgon Dyson Swarm. The bridge plunged back into the dim, bruised purple illumination of Krazmakor’s royal signature.

The main hololith flickered again. The burning sigil of the Emperor vanished. A direct audio transmission broadcast across the entire locked-down fleet replaced the image.

The voice of Kzar-Gorthennakk filled the bridge. Cold and absolute, the tone remained devoid of any paternal warmth or panic. This was the voice of a machine calculating the survival of a species through brutal arithmetic.

"The vanguard of the anomaly has been temporarily delayed," the Emperor stated. His voice resonated through the internal comms, echoing off the metal bulkheads. "All internal conflicts regarding the Praetorian Succession are hereby suspended indefinitely. We shift to a total war footing. The first strike required the complete consumption of the Earthgon array. Subsequent strikes will require significantly more fuel to maintain the defensive perimeter."

Krazmakor leaned forward in the throne. "Father..."

"The Cull begins now," the Emperor continued. He ignored the desperate whispers of his sons across the galaxy. "Every vassal world, every mining colony, every agricultural sector within the outer rim is marked for harvest. The populations will be processed for bio-magical fuel. The planetary cores will be tapped and drained to power the Aegis relays."

Cold blood ran through Eshiren’s veins. The cosmic horror of the Entropic Swarm had just been localized. No longer a distant threat approaching from the dark, it was a death sentence delivered from the throne room.

"Azaria is a Tier 3 vassal world," the Emperor stated, his voice ringing against the metal bulkheads. He delivered the final, devastating mandate without a hint of hesitation. "The fleet currently in orbit will commence the atmospheric ignition sequence. Burn the planet. Harvest the core. Deliver the energy to the capital. The Dragon Empire will survive this cycle, no matter the cost."

The transmission cut out. A heavy static hiss filled the silence in its wake.

Eshiren slowly turned away from the reinforced glass. He looked at Krazmakor. The younger prince sat frozen in the command throne. He stared blankly at the dark telemetry screen. The Emperor had just ordered his son to burn his own conquest to ash.

The Swarm was months away. But the apocalypse for Azaria had arrived today.
